I just saw they are doing a movie based on this 60's tv show. I'm hoping they don't screw it up.

It occurs to me that there are unwritten rules for making a successful movie from a tv show, things you should do, things you should not do. And they probably apply to movies made from books.

As a public service, or at least a service to movie directors, producers and script-writers, I thought we could compile a list of do's and don'ts.

You HAVE TO pay homage to the source material, sets and cast.

In the case of U.N.C.L.E., that means a cameo role for Robert Vaughn and/or David McCallum if you can arrange it.

You SHOULD NOT tamper with the iconic images of the original.

In this case, the NY HQ has to be in a tailor shop in a brownstone, accessed through the dressing room. And the handgun with attachments to make it into a sniper rifle must be used.

That's one have to and two should nots from me. Anyone else care to comment on adaptations in general or to give specific examples?

Use the fountain pen communicators instead of cellphones. And in my opinion this adaption is a no-go from the start. Look what was done with "The Equalizer".

My sons liked the movie, because they'd never seen the TV show. I thought it bombed. About all the movie Equalizer had in common with the TV show was the title. Leaving out the Mickey character was a major mistake, IMHO. He was fun.

Both the Lone Ranger movies sucked. The first one REALLY bombed, fan reaction to them suing Clayton Moore to make him stop doing appearances as The Lone Ranger. I've never seen it, in theater or on video. Suing Clayton Moore was unconscionable.

I also refused to watch the Jack Reacher movie with the munchkin playing 6'4" 250 lb Reacher. Idiotic.

There are things you just can't do.

The TV show Elementary. I refuse to watch it, Watson was not female.

Obviously, Bill Cosby will play the international terrorist/serial rapist.

There needs to be a picture of Leo G. Carroll on the wall someplace as the "founder".

It will be like the Mission Impossible movies which were nothing like the TV show. Not to say that they are not entertaining but they have the vaguest relation to the show.

A few random comments...

Remakes usually are not as good as the original.

Firefly to the movie Serenity only worked because it had the same actors and characters.

Jeremy Brett is Sherlock Holmes.

That is all.:rose:
