I Still want a Moderated GB

Won't work for me, my body will just reject them before the arsenic hits my stomach.
87) Noor will have her own pre-approved, non-body-rejecting-arsenic-laced-suicide-goody.

no multiple grins?

No thread jacking??? I am so opposed to this, some of the best threads come from thread jacking!

You'll have the regular General Board. For the Promised Land, you must be on topic.

the promised land sounds too high maintenance for me.

back to the pits.

And then it will be just the same as a million other boring, banal, tedious websites out there and it will die.

Of the dozens of forums I've been on, I've only seen one with the level of moderation I'm suggesting, and it's thriving.

naked dictator? i'm shallow. I could live with that.

I am sometimes naked, yes.

I'm sure it'll happen.

I actually think it's a pipe dream... but you never know.

Jonnie...,

Should I quote you so Never can see what you're saying?

:D

I do not have Johnny or you on ignore.

It can be done, but it's not easy. For the GB, it would take about 10 mods, maybe more, so at any time there would be at least 2 or 3 online. Decisions would be made by a consensus of at least 3 mods, which takes time.

The real sticking point to modding the GB is Lit's unlimited user accounts. It's not really possible to ban anyone. All a mod can do is kill a username. The user is still there.

There would still be the regular GB. This would be a new forum, and I doubt you'd need more than two mods at first as there wouldn't be much activity.

I've found the most persistent trolls at Lit are still posting under the handle they've used for years now.

I am sure that the first year would be difficult as people troll just to troll.

4) KS is the grandfather clock. He must record a sound that will play on all speakers at the top of the hour.

5) Because no one will be able to handle the sound, plans must be made for eventual (and unavoidable) mass-suicide. I vote for arsenic-laced snack cakes. Chocolate snack cakes. Or donuts. OOOH. Donuts.

You had me at Donuts.

It will happen. Someday we'll have another board for general discussion and it will be fully moderated. There will be thread bans, topic bans, and even forum bans. I'll just be able to empty my ignore list.

It will be glorious.

We had that. It was called Lint. It was like the enlightened liberal democracy of forums. And like every enlightened liberal democracy, it eventually depopulated itself.

*sigh*

I think that was relative to Lint being a closed forum. Although that was part of what made it special, it was like depriving a fire of oxygen. Eventually, the flames dwindled, and finally, only ashes remain.

Although I'm totally against further moderation of the GB, I do think a forum like Lint is a good idea. It would just require a way to allow new posters at a pace of more than one every two or three months.

Also, whatever, I can't sleep tonight.

True enough. Its exclusivity was its undoing. And I feel you on the insomnia front.

Of course, I don't have any idea how you could create a place that was exclusive, and therefore 'safe', but also attract and allow new members. It's a pretty good size catch-22. The atmosphere at Lint was so markedly different because by and large the members were comfortable sharing personal information and specifics about their lives.

Eta: at least we can keep each other company.

I dunno. Various subreddits seem to get it done - specific rules, active moderators, aggressive banhammers. Obviously, a place like this, it's hard to do that for the whole of Lit. But by forum? It's a lot for overhead, but we decentralize and manage to preserve both civility and intent.

Also, I think a real discussion needs to be had about the difference between "free speech" and "hate speech." The muckety-mucks up top here don't seem to be able or willing to draw that distinction.

i hope not. mods are such a crap shoot. the last thing this place needs is another douchebag that just wants the position for the minor power boost and everyone's inability to ignore their stupid ass.

Fuck you, man! It's possible I had a third reason.

I lost the link. And since no one ever came here so that I could ask, I just said fuck it.

The so-called muckety-mucks do a pretty amazing job, as far as I'm concerned. I hear your point, but I also understand why Laurel and Manu made the rules the way they did.

*raises fist*

See you at the monthly orgy.

Obvi. Garnate got so crazy last time I considered taking a month off... But I can't resist you fuckers.

My phone just autocorrected 'fuckers' to 'giblets'. What's that about?

When she tried to light the strap-on on fire I knew we were all in trouble.

Don't let parodyluvr75 see that "giblet" reference. She's jumpy as it is.

Mine does the exact opposite. I think my Gordon Ramsey app has eaten the Sim card.

See, that's the thing, though. Everyone seems to think that Free Speech means people should only be allowed to say things that don't offend other people. But that's not what it means at all.

"I'm all for Free Speech, but..." means you are not Free Speech. You believe speech should be censored in a certain way. Which is fine - that is your opinion, and you have a right to that opinion - but you logically can't claim to be pro-Free Speech and also pro-censorship.

My opinion is that removing the "n-word" from our vocabulary would not magically eradicate racism from society. Words are expressions of viewpoints.

Allowing people to use hateful/bigotted/anti-social words brings these ideas out into the open, where they can be discussed and disputed and challenged and ridiculed and eventually rejected.

Censoring "hate speech" doesn't rid the world of bigotry - it only drives it underground, where it can fester.

There is no better disinfectant than sunlight.

If reading certain things annoy you, you have the ability to put the author of those things on Ignore. But realize that closing your eyes to those things does not make them not-exist.

Of course, that's just one muckity-muck's opinion. You are welcome to disagree. :rose:
