I love the Onion sometimes...

I was thinking of getting some Panera's onion soup. Tried making it once but it was horrible.

The best is when people lose their shit over satire. :) I love when that happens.

The very best thing, though, is when Miles posts it as "truth". He got hoodwinked by the Onion once, and we had quite a bit of fun at his expense. Then he found yet another satire article at the Daily Currant (another satire site) and loudly exclaimed "I checked THIS one, it's NOT the Onion". Hilarity ensued again.

My favourite was some politician got his knickers in a bunch because they said he claimed this month to be Masturbation Month. He demanded a retraction, so they did. They corrected and rereleased it to be Sodomy Month or Pederasty Month or something way worse.

I think it would be fun to write for The Onion.

I don't know if I could think up a fake topic the way they do. It seems so random and often plausible, till you hit the details.

OMAHA, NE—Shaking his head as workers installed a fountain on his neighbor’s front lawn, business magnate Warren Buffett told reporters Wednesday that he cannot believe he’s stuck living next to the latest recipient of a Powerball jackpot. “Oh, what a treat, I get to be neighbors with some guy who walked into a gas station one day and asked a computer to pick six numbers,” said the multibillionaire investor, closing his window to avoid hearing the electronic dance music blasting from the $600 million prize winner’s poolside speaker system. “A Lamborghini, too? How original. I have no idea where this chump was living last week, but I give him one, two years tops before he blows it all and has to crawl back with his tail between his legs.” At press time, the so-called Oracle of Omaha was instructing his personal assistant to politely decline his neighbor’s invitation to go bison hunting together from his new helicopter.

I and a friend used to have an ongoing humorous commentary where we wondered out loud where the implications of certain current events might not-so-illogically take us if mankind didn't enact some socially corrective mechanism. We called it "Future News: Tomorrow's Headlines Today."

We never actually published anything. It was just a stream of consciousness we shared for our own amusement.

Like when feminists were reported to have torched their bras in protest we wondered, "Why would women burn their own underwear? Good bras aren't cheap. Wouldn't their social statement carry more impact if they just kidnap some guy and cut his dick off?"

So eventually, along comes Lorena Bobbitt.

I forget all the stuff we came up with, and at first it was funny to us because the absurd hypotheticals couldn't possibly come true. Then when they did, we started having WTF moments like everyone else.

I'm almost certain we "predicted" elementary school children getting expelled for having plastic knives in school lunch kits, for example.

We finally stopped doing it when it became obvious that there literally was nothing too ridiculous in the way of human behavior or actual social policy to come true.

I hadn't really considered that when I read the Onion it always hints of the plausible today, but would have been wildly absurd in an earlier (and I think more sensible) time.
