I believe they don't realize how unappealing it makes either of them look.
*shrug
Well, you're half right.
Took me a min to realize you're probably referring to the Lit Wings.![]()
Ooooh, and here I thought I could slide that one by ya.

Well, things might be different if people around here accepted others as actual people rather than flat one-note characters. In real life, I have never said to someone "That's not what you said 2 years ago! OhmyGod! You're such a liar and a hypocrite!" People around here hold others to a very rigid view point and ability to express their opinion. Even when someone admits that they were wrong, very rarely is credit given, especially if the argument got heated. No, if you're wrong and you admit it, it is seen as you being stupid, a failure, a weakling. So, not only are people discouraged from learning and growing and evolving as humans naturally do, but we're also discouraged by the populace from admitting or owning up to mistakes, even when we might not necessarily agree with that opinion we held anymore. We're sworn to defend that position until the day that userID never logs in again lest we lose ALL credibility forever.
I think in that way, a lot of times it does encourage alt-making to express opinions or changes to our thought-patterns that it would be deemed unacceptable to the status quo for the main identity to have. I say we reject that line of thinking. If we're really supposed to take care and remember that there are real people behind the screen, then let's stop treating them like one-dimensional characters with no ability to grow or change. Just my 2 cents.
I think you might be generalizing a bit. I personally have no problem whatsoever admitting when I make a mistake on an error of fact. The problem as I see it is that a lot of folks here confuse opinion with facts.
I do get a kick out of the lengths that some folks here go to to avoid admitting a mistake. When "mathmatics" (sic) major 4est_4est_Gump declared that one quarter one dollar and one nickel equaled 91 cents for example. Or when Vetty solemnly swore that Drudge was the "number one news site on the Internet. Both of these guys spent literally dozens of posts "explaining" their answer was "technically correct".
Another fun thing is when folks redefine words here. Lit's "Nutty Perfesser" kbate is the classic case: she redefined the word "racism" to mean saying anything positive about any race. (This goes a long way towards explaining why she never got tenured teaching anywhere). More recently, query jumped through hoops redefining the phrase "annual interest" to avoid acknowledging a fact from cowslinger.
