This is a fantastic little story.

Pawn your sneakers

Entrepreneurship at its best. One of those, "Damn, I wish I had thought of that" stories.

Saw this a while ago.

Part of the kids secret sauce is that he has a FATHER. This story would not exist if he were raised by a single mom. Unpopular opinion but very true.

Sad but true. The numbers have been in for couple of decades now and no one wants to face up to the facts.

Hogwash. Any parent, single or no, with the means to provide their child with $30,000 worth of sneakers could do the same. All it took was his parent being supportive.

The odds are long on a single parent being able to afford such largess based on the known factors of acquiring wealth, a stable marriage being one of the three legs of the stool.

Which doesn't change the fact that the important detail here was the wealth and support not the penis.

Why do you hate traditional marriage, stability and the facts that follow from it so much?

I mean, our political culture is awash on how hard and impoverishing it is to be a single mom. Do you have issues with your father?

I'll grant you this: In the rare exceptional case of a Gwyneth Paltrow, what you say may be entirely true, but in most single happenstances it is clearly not true that a single parent can spoil a child and by inference what LF was saying (and trust me, I'm trying to avoid her because she does not like my style of thinking, so I really do not want to speak for her) is that in too many families, they are sans a father and hence less likely to get that extra boost up in life and again, to continue, less likely to have a stable relationship thus completing the cycle. The mentioning of the father was an implied association with a marriage and not a single father.

Hate is a strong word, I don't have any feelings about it one way or the other really.

It is hard being a single mother but again the stats your bringing up are ultimately about wealth not a penis. If two men or two women, or a a single but wealthy parent were in the scenario it all works out just fine.

So you have decided that the best way to be right is to define the discussion to a very narrow and focused study of a clear minority of American households.

;) ;)

Clever man. You win.

No, I chose to point out that the defining detail isn't the all powerful magic penis.

He makes his mind up about something and sticks with it to the bitter end regardless of what the statistical facts are. It's why he's on ignore.

what kind of sneakers ...used sneakers...did he sell to generate $30k of start up capital?!

I know I'm a bumpkin, but, wow, just, wow.

I was thinking the same thing. He either had a collection that would have made Imelda Marcos envious or he had 30-40 pair of those thousand dollar sneakers (which is outrageous all by itself).

In a sense you have to admit he was self-financing.

As a side note, I wonder what sort of security that store has? I figure that it would be as plump a target as a liquor store.

Dad may well be a genius. He took a drain on his disposable income and turned him into an entrepreneur. Go Dad!!

Now it's not a penis, it's a piece of paper.

You can't pin the Chief down, nossir.

So there appears to be a difference of opinion as to what was the key factor in the success of the kid's business.

Those of us in the reality-based world seem to think it is financial backing.

The other side say it's a daddy in the house, or a marriage license.

No, I chose to point out that the defining detail isn't the all powerful magic penis.

This precisely.

If anything, perhaps it would be more appropriate to rename this thread as follows: "Sneaker entrepreneur and why I still have unresolved issues with my mum".

While the article didn't specify, I would guess that kid is the product of a stable marriage with a father and a mother. That is the best way to raise a child, all factors being equal. Statistically speaking, that is the best way to raise a stable, successful child. A single mom simply could not have parented the kid in the article to such success. I don't know why this is so hard to believe. Next up I am sure people will claim a transgender single "mom" is just as good a parent.
