The unanimity of outrage expressed on Twitter, the unthinking allegiance to the cause of the hour whatever that cause might be, the social positioning of writers struggling to be the most pure, the most righteous, the most moving in their indignation — all of these things remind me of other scandals, of other rages, in which the targets were not Islamic terrorists but men and women who disagree with elements of liberal dogma.

Do liberals actually believe in the right to offend? Their attitude seems to me to be ambivalent at best. And this equivocation was apparent within hours of the attack, when news outlets censored or refused to publish the images for which the Charlie Hebdo editors were killed. Classifying satire or opinion as “hate speech” subject to regulation is not an aberration. It is commonplace.

Indeed, the outpouring of support for free speech in the aftermath of the Paris attack coincides with, and partially obscures, the degradation of speech rights in the West. Commencement last year was marked by universities’ revoking of appearances by speakers Condoleezza Rice and Ayaan Hirsi Ali for no other reason than that mobs disagreed with the speakers’ points of view. I do not recall liberals rallying behind Condi and Hirsi Ali then.

Nor do I recall liberals standing up for the critics of global warming and evolutionary theory, of same-sex marriage and trans rights and women in combat, of riots in Ferguson and of Obama’s decision to amnesty millions of illegal immigrants. On the contrary: To dissent from the politically correct and conventional and fashionable is to invite rebuke, disdain, expulsion from polite society, to court the label of Islamophobe or denier or bigot or cisnormative or misogynist or racist or carrier of privilege and irredeemable micro-aggressor. For the right to offend to have any meaning, however, it cannot be limited to theistic religions. You must have the right to offend secular humanists, too.

how inspiring to see the million-strong crowd arching in unison through paris today - so many nationalities, and leaders from 50 countries, chanting je suis charlie!

apparently many more than 1 million.... streets are filled, people marching for freedom of thought and speech. :heart:

estimates of up to 1.6 million!

the reports have been revised to up to 2 million in paris central, with a further 1 mill attending rallies in the suburbs - and then there are unity rallies right around the world. :rose:

Yes it is inspiring Butters.

But how many terrorist attacks will your good feelings or this march prevent?

Will you be similarly inspired by the courageous young men who search out and kill the terrorists in their bolt holes in Arabia, Yemen, Syria etc.

Will you accept that when those men find those terrorists they will also kill their women and children. Is that an acceptable cost to preserve your safety?

Doesn't your failure to endorse action against these people endorse Oggbashan's appeasement of these terrorists.

I don't endorse Insanity Sam's views, but when are people like you and Og going to stand up and say enough is enough, and accept the fact that the only solution is to deal with the terrorists using the same methods as they dish out.

It seems to me Butters that people like yourselves and Og have piles of opinions but no solutions.:rose:

This is middle class area. It’s lots of different stores. Not just Jewish stores like you said, Muslim stores as well. A variety of shops here. People would not expect to see much police activity in this area. So it’s a very ordinary, if I can say that, a very ordinary part of the east of Paris, really.

my good feelings? none at all
the march? i'm in no position to say - but if the unity rally throws a spotlight on the race/nationality issues that exist in the paris suburbs that cause some french people to feel ignored or alientated then that has to be a positive. if further information about the people responsible for the days' attacks in france leads to more intelligence about the network that controls their thinking, and that intelligence can be put to good use, then that, too, is something positive to take from the carnage.

i believe you'll find we both believe enough is too much, but understand that there are other options, other methods to employ, than the terrorists' own. politics and economics have a huge role to play in all of this, in my opinion. when you use the kind of tactics the terrorists use you've already lost - it's like cutting off one head that gets replaced by seven others.

i accept that opinion without rancour, ishtat - i have no ''solutions''; i'm not a politician or a strategist for the armed forces, just a regular member of the public who understands there's a whole lot of history, power-play, plus stuff i know nothing about, that affects the decisions/actions and outcome of every move made by any side involved. can unity be a bad thing if it means different gov'ts sharing more information, faster, and combining intelligence for a more co-ordinated response?
 
I have no solutions either.

When your next door neighbour's polite helpful son can become a terrorist who commits murder on the streets of his town, how to you stop him?

How do you identify him? He might claim to be a moderate Muslim, attend a moderate Mosque, have a job, a girlfriend and show no abnormal behaviour until one day he decides to be a 'martyr' for radical fanatics.

Bombing Yemen (most of whom are fighting Al-Queda) and bombing Iraq and Syria where Al-Queda are fighting the so-called Islamic State might prevent expansion of territory but it does NOTHING to stop the home-grown terrorist. Instead it gives them 'justification' for their acts. Al-Queda and IS are embedded in civilian communities. Unless they are on a battlefield it is very difficult to bomb them without killing 'innocents', particularly children. Both have learned from HAMAS - place your weapons and bases in or close to schools, hospitals, UN facilities, and mosques so that any attack can be condemned as 'unjust'.

Fighting jihadists is not simple. It is extremely difficult to identify them in our midst.

We have to fight them. But the best, and probably only way, is to work with Muslims to destroy the jihadists' basis of their perverted ideology. That cannot be done by armed police, or special forces, only by fellow Muslims rejecting them. 'Not in my name' is a good start, as were the Muslims on the streets of France.
 
How do you work with Muslims. ...they could be the next terrorist
 
French is simple. Every expression means one of two things: I SURRENDER! or HOORAY FOR ME AND FUCK YOU.
