The Canadian Government has taken the unusual step of advising the majority of the country to prepare for a severe drop in temperatures. And we're in it, right now.
Current temp outside is -38 with wind chill. (That's -36 F). In rural areas, it's about 7 degrees colder.
At these temperatures, even a fully charged car battery will freeze. Salt on roads is completely ineffective; it does nothing. The interior heating system on many cars (in particular, cars powered by modern, efficient 4 cylinder engines) is overwhelmed by the cold, and is unable to heat the interior to a comfortable temperature. Even the interior defrost system will fail, meaning that drivers must drive with the windows open in order to avoid frost buildup on the windshield.
Metal becomes brittle; parts snap; public transportation systems become less reliable. People can be left waiting at bus stops for buses that aren't coming.
Roads become polished, ice on the roads becomes rock hard. Many roads are undriveable; roads on hills are unclimbable.
Human skin will freeze in minutes; and that includes normally exposed skin, such as faces. Scarves are mandatory. Multiple layers of clothing provide the best protection.
Currently, many parts of Canada are colder than a typical day on the planet Mars.
Temperatures are expected to abate within the next day or two; and the long range forecast shows temps slightly above freezing in about a week. So, it won't last forever.
But we're in it now.
