Canada under severe cold advisory

The Canadian Government has taken the unusual step of advising the majority of the country to prepare for a severe drop in temperatures. And we're in it, right now.

Current temp outside is -38 with wind chill. (That's -36 F). In rural areas, it's about 7 degrees colder.

At these temperatures, even a fully charged car battery will freeze. Salt on roads is completely ineffective; it does nothing. The interior heating system on many cars (in particular, cars powered by modern, efficient 4 cylinder engines) is overwhelmed by the cold, and is unable to heat the interior to a comfortable temperature. Even the interior defrost system will fail, meaning that drivers must drive with the windows open in order to avoid frost buildup on the windshield.

Metal becomes brittle; parts snap; public transportation systems become less reliable. People can be left waiting at bus stops for buses that aren't coming.

Roads become polished, ice on the roads becomes rock hard. Many roads are undriveable; roads on hills are unclimbable.

Human skin will freeze in minutes; and that includes normally exposed skin, such as faces. Scarves are mandatory. Multiple layers of clothing provide the best protection.

Currently, many parts of Canada are colder than a typical day on the planet Mars.

Temperatures are expected to abate within the next day or two; and the long range forecast shows temps slightly above freezing in about a week. So, it won't last forever.

But we're in it now.

Don't you have the engine block heater thingys to plug your car in so they start right up?

Stay warm, or inside!

You sound like a big baby Mister Chris.

Wind chill does not lower the temperature of anything that does not have heat.

As far as I'm concerned, Its making ice so we can go fishing and freezing the wet spots in the swamps so the groomers can get through and make us some fun trails...now if it would only snow a foot or so

Oh puhhhleeeeeeze, that's nothing. Put your big girl pants on and then a few more layers and you'll be fine.

You're in Canada
it gets cold
its called winter
get over it!

A true Canuck knows how to keep warm!

It's -13F/-25C here, right now, and we are in a wind chill advisory of -35F/-37C.
Car's don't seem to care about wind chill as much, what is your real temp?

I have started my previous car in -30F/-34C real temps before, it all depends on how good your battery is. I haven't had to start the current car when it has been colder than -22F/-30C so far.

I didn't start my car yesterday in -6F/-21C but I suppose I ought to today. I don't have a block heater but that is another thing I should think about. I had one in the past and it made a big difference.

I am good except for gloves/mitten, I got a new pair with wind block(!), but finger tips still freeze, which I suspect means I frost bit them or something earlier. So today might be the day for digging out the ultrex and polarfleece and making some new mittens, and maybe a neck gator. I gave my last one away to a visiting Californian.

It might also be the day for trying out the fake fur coat I picked up at a swap last spring, it's been too warm for it so far.

Last year the first time it was -13F I was being a roadie/road manager in rural Minnesota, staying in a farmhouse without central heating when I was on crutches with a raging infection, at least this time I am home with central heating, can walk and no infection.

-38 is nothing to sneeze at Wings.

You know this.

It's currently -27 here. It's not anything to sneeze at but it's not unusual. We live in the upper tier, he lives in Canada. It's not a shock.

Gloves are no joke. The Ginger bought me electric hand warmers and they rock. Maybe it's something you can look into. Plus I can charge my phone on them if I need to.

I had my diesel gell up last year one time and killed two batteries trying to get it started.

I'm always amazed cars and machinery run in that kind of weather.

If I lived up north like you people I'd have an engine heater or three.

I had to warm my truck this morning for a half hour to make a three block drive to drop Meadow off at the vet.

She's having her teef cleaned today.

You are actually lucky Chris, I doubt we will be above freezing for quite some time, like at least a month.

-38 f maybe that works to what again -7 -8 in reality which is not that bad. the gusting winds make it worse. Living in Toronto im guessing it would be worse in Alberta and Winter peg but I work in -30 so its kind of mild to me :p

Highway is closed now, glad I wasn't planning on going anywhere...I hate sneaking around the baricades
