Is it? I am starting to think that there needs to be a civilian law enforcement which is separate and distinct from the military. Maybe the rule should be if you are a VFW you can't walk a beat.

What do you think?

The civilian police force and the military are already separate. Are you talking about barring veterans from becoming police officers when they leave the service? If so, what would be your reasoning?

The military has no place in law enforcement

We need andy Griffin at home. Let arnold take care of our international enemies.

Its bad enough that the cops wear bulletproof vest and park their squad cars to give them cover when they stop you for bad tail lights.

It just goes to show that they are ready to fight you as though you were a terrorist over any infraction.

We now have the police force and the police attitudes that every other police state has.

Somehow I had always hoped for better from america but that is where we are now

That is exactly what I am thinking.

My reasoning is that there needs to be more of a separation between people trained for law enforcement vs people trained for national defense.

Here is an example, how about police are not armed? How about we have law enforcement without firearms?

Yes - this is sort of what I am thinking as well.

If you can also persuade all criminals to get rid of their weapons, that would work.

That will work great as long as you convince all the criminals to be Otis.

You have lost your mind! Half of them would be dead the first week!

I think your reasoning is wrong. The personality types that join the military would still join the police. It's a mentality and it's not something that gets taught to you it's something that you are.

As for not arming the cops, arming fewer of them would nice. What really might help however is a combination of telling the police (and meaning it) that every time they fire their weapon their will be an investigation and that investigation will be done by an outside organization that are specifically forbidden from forming social ties with the police.

Honestly it could work. Part of the reason criminals arm up is that the cops and other criminals arm up. Every gun you can eliminate from the system eliminates some of the need for other people to be armed.

Tasers, clubs, tear gas sprays and Kevlar just aren't quite enough?

Hell no!

The law has to be at least as well armed as the criminals.

The problem modern day is that the law enforcement organization officers considers everyone a criminal until they maybe, manage to prove different.
