How do you tell the difference between the two? Is it how the guy presents himself? Is it the words? Just curious
 
If it's from a stranger while I'm passing by, it's unwelcome. I don't care what you call it.
 
I used to be a cashier and i used to compliment people all the time. But it was like nice purse or nice ring. I feel that is fine. Also ive been called nasty stuff by ladies and seen it as rude but a different person could say it and it not be that bad.

Example: My 15 year old neighbor yells out "youre hot!!!" When i go to work. I never talk to her but i just see it as immaturity, harmless.

27 year old girl as im walking down the street and im like thats not cool.
 
If you're seriously asking and not just letting us know that some 15 year old thinks you're hot.. do a search. this topic was very well covered a few months ago.
it's an interesting read and people became very passionate.. it's unlikely to be repeated with that level of feeling.

I didtnt post it for that reason. Thats nasty. I couldnt find a thread. Still trying to navigate around here, its not mobile friendly. But thanks i will look for it.

Oh, but I love threads like that! Human emotion at its liveliest. I get wonderfully detached and scientific, like some android observer.
 
ok just read that thread, very insightful. I just don't want to come off as creepy but also at the same time I was raised as a very friendly complimentary person. My aunt and mom would be that person saying hey nice_____. so I wanted to hear more opinions on the matter.

not true at all. First off no one is an ugly cow. there is someone for everyone.
 
I looked for the thread and think it was archived. If it hasn't been, it will resurface. If it didn't reference feminism, unintentional rape, confusion, anger, fear, loneliness, and bullying.. it's a different one.

it would be interesting to see though.. because the question is now reversed and the men are in the spotlight.
 
I think the prevailing sentiment was simply don't bother unless you know said person well. I think literally the only person I compliment is the secretary and it only extends to 'I like what you did with your hair'. Thus far I've not felt the compulsion to compliment her tits. From the infamous thread it seemed some women took even the most innocuous comment and turn it into something that'd probably be at home on the front page of the tabloids.

Just to highlight my almost bunker mentality towards women in general there are a number of lit ladies on here who I find witty, beautiful, sexy or all of the above but decline to let them know. Only in the rarest of cases have I made any utterances.

Sad? A pity? Maybe. But least they don't feel threatened and avoid hostility or trouble. Everyone's a winner. Accept maybe card companies. Or possibly the local florists. I'm rusty on all things stalker.

I am not someone who is easily offended. I have way more guy friends than girl friends and I'm crass as hell once you know me. The jokes and conversations I've been part of are the ones that get you fired when said to the wrong person. I think these things are funny, and I am flattered when complimented.

All of this said, some men are crazy rapey and say and do horrible things. Don't be one of them.

And, if you're complimenting a woman you don't know, you are doing that for you, not her. She doesn't need it. Move on.

Generic 'you' a given. But I stand by my words. No compliments from me.
 
I think there was a mixed consensus and that a great deal of it depended on the surroundings. With the Op, for example..
even though I took a poke at the age thing.. one compliment came from someone near his home (perhaps a safer environment) and was not prejudiced with sexual overtone. the other happened on the street where any one of us could feel more vulnerable.
