Sounds to me like cartilage shifting a bit, though I seriously doubt the jaw dislocating. Either way, though, that area is packed with nerves, so as long as it's not causing pain (assuming you're not using a numbing agent) I wouldn't worry. If anything was being damaged, I can't imagine "It doesn't hurt, just feels weird in a nice way" would be true. I also really doubt the larynx is affected significantly, since you reflexively send anything liquid or solid to the esophagus instead of the trachea (and get uncontrollable coughing on the rare instance that doesn't happen).

So yah, in short; I'm not 100% sure what it is, but anything worth worrying about would not feel at all like what you describe, so it's probably just cartilage or some other connective tissue shifting slightly to accommodate him.

Thanks for everyone's input. I got multiple different answers both through this post and through PM. So I did some reading up on anatomy...

Turns out that what I am feeling is encountered quite commonly when things are shoved down throats - the examples I could find were all eosophagoscopy descriptions. (Camera down the throat).

There is a pseudo sphincter in your throat at the top of the esophagus. What I am feeling is the pressure against this followed by the "pop" as he passes it. The descriptions discuss encountering resistance at this point when inserting cameras.

So that appears to be the answer
