UK: Queen’s Guard Forced To Retreat Over Threats From Islamic Terrorists…

Security chiefs have taken the dramatic step of withdrawing Royal Guards from their high-profile posts outside palaces amid mounting fears of ‘lone wolf’ terrorist attacks.

Elite soldiers of the Queen’s Guard have pulled back from public positions at many landmarks in response to possible threats from Islamic extremists.
For the first time since the height of the IRA’s terror campaign, the soldiers are also no longer allowed on sentry duty alone, and are now accompanied by armed police.

The move to more secure positions behind gates or railings is a direct response to attacks such as the murder of Fusilier Lee Rigby and the killing of a sentry by a lone gunman at the Canadian Parliament two months ago.

But the measures have been described as a ‘retreat’ for the Guards, known the world over for their bearskin caps.

The point is that when there is a raised threat level, it is stupid to leave troops as obvious targets. The threat against serving personnel is real. If the nutcases/terrorists know that a soldier will be standing in one place for hours, and their locations are listed in tourist guide books - it doesn't take much brain to find the soldier.

Sam, England is a small country.

If a nutcase or self-starting terrorist woke up one morning thinking "I'll kill a soldier today", all he has to do is buy a knife, a train ticket to Central London, and find a ceremonial guard within an hour or so.

Cost? Less than 50 US dollars from most parts of England. If he wants to travel by coach, even less money.

There are no security checks on trains, the Underground, or coaches.

Several potential terrorists recently arrested in the UK had been planning that sort of low key attack.
