I do not agree with the concept, but there is an unintended consequence of government largesse at work here. She must disclose the wealth of her parents even as an adult when applying for college loans. The system is set up to punish rich kids with bad, selfish parents.

She would have been better off being born without her "privilege" when it comes to "qualifying' for grant money.

Judges make weird, illegal orders all the time. So I imagine the judge has no jurisdiction or the parents are lying about something, and the judge has jurisdiction over the money. Most are resolved by encouraging the judge to go fuck herself. It infuriates judges but the appeals court rarely upholds the goofy orders.

My mother was so abrasive to judges our city court usta fine her for contempt before she opened her mouth. It was illegal as hell but fun to watch. She was in court a lot over non-service of court orders by the local constable, a personal enemy of her's.

I saw this story. A totally farcicle claim. Probably just step one to getting student loans paid for by the FeD, since college is 'required' and 'expensive' due to many reasons other than faculty salaries and new statues.

Yeah, but this offspring is 21 years old and she was over 18 when the brouhaha started (Aug. 2013) If I were her father, I would defy the court order while appealing it.

She's suing for her EFC, which the government requires parents to pay. Unless she's 24 she has to get it from her guardians and she can only get it covered by financial aid if she first sues them. I had to do this same thing. You have to either have a civil suit saying that they refuse to pay, or have paperwork from police/social services saying that they're neglectful. A LOT of people sue like this, the court always sides with the parents, neither child nor parent care, life goes on. Basically all you have to do, as a parent, is go before the judge and say, "We've had a falling out, I refuse to pay." The judge signs a form to that effect, and you turn in the form with your fasfa to achieve "independent student" status. This is extremely common. I don't know why you guys are acting like it's something you didn't know.

Edit: It's super rare that they're required to pay, though, which means that there's a LOT more going on than what he's willing to say. Generally that only happens if the child has been severely abused and the parents are required to backpay the money. Taking into account that the daughter also won't talk to them, she's probably an abuse survivor.
