depends on how tall you are, longer or shorter, and how much overweight, thickerer or thinnerer.

I would say stick with hickory or ash for a good solid cane though...oh, and get one of them metal grippers for the end of it in winter...don't wanna be slipping on the ice

The thicker canes distribute the impact over a bigger surface therefore diminishing the pain. The thinner the cane, the higher the pain.
