a different angle on tackling the 'rape epidemic'.

that's because you don't hear about most rapes. most rapes are never reported.

What can we do to increase reporting? Obviously the social stigma, even in western "civilized" societies, keeps many from reporting, as does, I'm sure the justice system, which until very recently has often been perceived as permitting the rapist to put the victim on trial for the way she "looked" or "dressed" or "walked" or "spoke".

While I agree that some rapes probably go unreported, I'm not sure how one keeps statistics on matters unreported.

it doesn't usually get reported to police, but it often does eventually come to support groups, family doctors, etc. it's on my medical records.

the reasons it doesn't get reported are many and complex. because it's so often the men we are closest too, it's harder. it might well be the father of your kids.

That's the awful truth. :( A very close friend of mine was raped by her husband and never reported. I only found out about it recently and it makes it hard because I'm friends with them both and I understand the struggle she went through to decide not to report it. Never knew the guy was capable of that kind of thing. What do we as a society do? He's the father of her children, she's not going to leave him and she's dependent on him anyway. It benefits her very little to see him punished, or to even go through the whole rigamarole to have nothing come of it. But there's no consequence for him either, no way to stop it from happening again. She certainly can't threaten him with a gun for the same reasons she can't threaten him with going to the police.

ETA: No disrespect meant. I truly feel kind of helpless watching this happen and I'm open to learning more about the issue.

regular guys. guys who would doubtless intervene if they saw a woman being attacked in an alleyway. guys with jobs, friends, families.

this is the reality of rape for many women.

Hawk = hausieren

Means she tells everybody everything even if nobody's asking or cares about. There is no "none of your business", she wants anybody to know what she's been through.

Only liars say "it's none of your business".

Its a forum board. Most of the shit people post wasn't asked for and I would wager at least half the shit posted here no one gives a shit about. She stated what happened to her. Like it or don't, believe it or not. *shrugs
Only ass jockeys say "only liars say its none of your business"

I choose to believe her over you because Germans love David hasslholf and I don't trust people like that.

So, if I were to shoot and stop, maybe even kill, a rapist, that wouldn't be prevention? I get that it's self-defense, but I don't see the disconnect between self-defense and prevention.

Here it is:

Self-defense is for getting out of a rape situation. For this, any advice is helpful and appreciated, from taking fighting lessons to how you best behave in that situation. I would even say that carrying a gun for that is a good option in the states.

Prevention is for not getting into a rape situation at all. And let's be honest: any advice given could possibly called "sexist". There is no difference between "carry a gun, so you won't be raped no more" and "dont dress like a slut". Both are insults to already raped women. Take for instance Christie Mac. Which advice would have been better for her? "Leave that bastard of Warmachine at the smallest suggestion of violence" or "carry a gun, so he won't rape you"? Keep in mind that she once loved him.

And that's the thing why I'm riding on garnate's story: if that prevention thing with her gun works, she should at least explain how this could work. As a former rape victim, I would be proud to explain anybody my solution of prevention.

I don't expect you to listen to a word anyone says, you've plainly showed no interest in that.

Yes, pardon my apathy for "shut up, dumbfuck" advices.

I think most of you are happy to find a pet peeve.

I'm an even bigger asshole. Because I say "I decide for myself, what's my business. If you think, it's not - well, don't tell me anything about it. It's that simple."

And it's just my experience that people saying "its none of your business" turn out to be liars.

I choose to believe her over you because Germans love David hasslholf and I don't trust people like that.

Oh how I missed that argument :D

You've got my deepest sympathy for that. Though I'm German, I don't get that rapture about him, and most German even listen to worse music like that. Sometimes I think they must be zombies to stand it.

Hey fuckstick? Once again, me getting a gun wasn't for rape prevention, but you're so stuck on it and HOW COULD A GUN POSSIBLY KEEP SOMEONE FROM BEING RAPED, I DON'T UNDERSTAND BECAUSE I APPARENTLY STOPPED PAYING ATTENTION IN SCHOOL WHEN I WAS 8 YEARS OLD AND MY MOM DRANK TOO MUCH WHEN SHE WAS PREGNANT WITH ME SO I ALSO LACK ANY KIND OF COMMON SENSE SO PLEASE, PLEASE GARNATE, EXPLAIN TO ME HOW A GUN COULD PREVENT RAPE, EVEN THOUGH YOU DIDN'T BUY IT FOR RAPE PREVENTION AND PLEASE EXPLAIN EVERY DETAIL OF YOUR RAPES TO ME BECAUSE AS A STRANGER, IF IT'S TRULY NONE OF MY BUSINESS, YOU MUST BE LYING ABOUT IT.

Moron.

if everyone says you're an arsehole and a moron, it's likely you're an arsehole and a moron.

Off course, you can't lie. Because tits.

I'm really sorry that I glibly pointed out that I hadn't gotten raped since owning a hand gun when someone else mentioned women being armed for prevention. NOT THAT IT'S ANY OF YOUR BUSINESS, YOU FUCKING MORON, but I haven't been raped in 6 years. I've had my gun for 2 years. I was pointing out that I hadn't been raped since I bought the gun. That's what the "Coincidence?" was about, but if you weren't mentally handicapped you would've picked up on it and taken the post for what it was. I'm really sorry for you.

Yes, and I pointed out it could be because you possibly quitted to meet the wrong men. It wasn't meant insulting. This is some kind of prevention, and for some women, it's the hardest part of all.

And btw: noors post about women being armed for prevention sounded to me like tongue-in-cheek. You were the one taking that too seriously. But I'm happy you wasn't raped even at your times without a gun.

why don't you just fuck off out of this thread? you're adding nothing constructive, you have nothing interesting to say, you're pissing everyone off with your idiocy.

I can only assume your continued posting is deliberate trolling.

Noor was being tongue-in-cheek and so was I, until you decided to throw your stupidity all over the thread. I hope you feel like a big man, pretending a rape victim is a liar because she wouldn't share every detail of it with you. I bet all of your nerdy WoW friends will get a kick out of that and you can all laugh about it during your school lunch hour tomorrow.

Rape has always existed. We can't be having an "epidemic" unless you have some reason to believe the incidence has been increasing.

There is also the question of what is increasing, the incidents or the reporting.

Rape has traditionally been an under-reported crime.
