because, weirdly enough, rapists aren't some other species of humanity, they're not all psychopathic monsters, and they won't all go on ten year rape sprees. because most rapists are just regular guys, your neighbour, your postman, your best mate, your son. because, though rape is a vile act which deserves to be punished, it shouldn't always mean that person has no place left in society.

I would rather see compulsory re-education, I would rather group therapy forced them to face up to the reality of their crime, and I would rather people put as much energy into supporting the tediousness of the victims' recovery (because it is fucking tedious) as they do into their yeehaw glee at the fantasy of a barbaric revenge.

There have been numerous cases where they have been punished and within a very short time have raped again. While they may come from all walks of life and socioeconomic backgrounds, I disagree that most rapist are "just regular guys". They are not "just regular guys", they are rapists, who commit a barbaric act that has consequences in the victim's life far beyond the physical trauma. I agree that much more effort should be put into supporting victim recovery. The only therapy the rapist would receive is the one I've already mentioned, administered without glee or fanfare, in a clinical setting. Think of it not so much as revenge, but rather as preventative medicine. Most rapists would probably find it better than being stabbed in the eye. A finger in the eye can be just as disarming, if done correctly (no yeehaw necessary).

Sure, inside of 21 feet, a gun doesn't always beat a knife, another gun, or a fist but it's better to have one than not. Especially if you assailant is larger.

Just because in the movies the hero pulls a gun and then goes to fisticuffs, does not mean that the average person does not high-tail it as soon as they become aware that they are going up against a gun. Yes, it is possible to disarm a gunman. It is also very possible to get shot in the process.
