I contacted a friend of mine, Allen who works in the Nascar industry, about a client of mine who loves Nascar. My client is mentally disabled. He can speak in small sentences but mostly in one or two words. He mumbles so it is hard to understand him but I have been around him for so long, I can usually pick out what he is staying. Some words are clear as a bell though and it usually has to do with Nascar, football or baseball.

I want you to understand how much Nascar means to this young man, he is 27 years old. Dale Jr is "The Man" to him.

As I said, I contacted Allen several weeks ago about giving my client some Nascar items for Christmas and he came through for me. He sent me Martin Truex hats, Kurt Busch hats, a Martin Truex hoodie and tee shirt, and several Kurt shirts.

I just thought this was a great Christmas story and worth sharing. There are people out there and even online, that truly care.

To me Allen is "The Man."

5 cheers for Ms Pink. 3 would not be enough.

Many years ago when I was involved with a race team (hence the name) we were almost continually bombarded with requests for ride alongs, shirts, etc from kids. I was fortunate- our driver loved kids. If there was a child who wanted an autograph, shirt or a ride and they had an illness or disability, it was not even questioned. The racing community goes out of its way for this type of thing. Always has. NASCAR as an organization may be a bunch of overpaid, arrogant asswipes who have forgotten where their money came from, but show a driver or crew guy a child in need and they will respond.

Gah, I wish I could find a link to it but there was a book written about the good, the bad and the incredibly awkward interactions between kids and their heroes.

Just last week there was a story about a kid who saved his money up for a year to buy flashy Kevin Durant basketball shoes. The first time he wore them outside he got mugged and some punks stole his shoes.

Kevin Durant heard about and sent the kid some personally autographed replacement shoes, and invited him to the team locker room before a game. Poor kid froze up like a deer in the headlights meeting his idol. Durant was incredibily gracious, trying to talk to the boy one-on-one, but the kid was near catatonic.

That was a gorgeous story, Pink. Thank you. I shall always think of that now when someone mentions NASCAR.
