The Official Author's Hangout 2014 Winter Holidays Contest Support Thread

Not mine. Lost one vote overnight. I also have a very persistent troll. I've deleted his racist comment four times already, but he keeps coming back.

Have you reported the comments to Laurel? If not do so instead of deleting them. Sometimes the comments disappear and so does the poster.

No, I haven't. He's posting as anonymous. I know it's the same person because he references the fact that he keeps getting deleted.

Anymouse can go south just as fast as anyone from the inside of a website. An isp ban works for all.

Well look at that, make a post and get a bomb.

Mister troll is certainly lurking on these boards.
I started noticing a pattern earlier. Every post I made in this thread resulted in a bombing. Yet look at me doing it again.

I enter the contests for the same reasons I buy lottery tickets.
1. Ya gotta play to win.
2. Not gonna win but hey, how cool would it be if I did?
3. The fun I have eagerly and hopefully checking my numbers only to be disappointed.

Mine doesn't need bombing. I took care of the low score on my own. :D
Yeah, I got bombed but I'm astonished that anyone bothered. It was low already.

Part of what I enjoy most about the contest is the Support Thread, and also picking up some great authors to read. So I'm not going to miss out on that at the risk of another bombing.

Yeah, I got bombed but I'm astonished that anyone bothered. It was low already.

The first votes on one of my stories, minutes after release, were bombs. Several of them. It was at 1.00 for some time.:D

I'm fairly certain that once an IP is identified as malicious, it wipes out every vote from that IP in the entire database -- at least for a certain period of time.

So, most likely, they're not really sweeping your story. They're sweeping the contest, or a toplist, or some author's list and the votes on your older story are just peripheral.

So they are sweeping the serial trolls current damage in this contest and catching some from the last one-or stuff he went back to- interesting, but makes sense.

I had a poster leave racist remarks on about fifteen of my stories-and none of them are interracial in anyway, they just kept calling me a talentless "N word" and some other stuff.

Normally I leave everything there, but Laurel had mentioned in a thread they were starting to go into stories and remove those on their own as they were offensive to anyone reading them

So I pm'd her with the link to one of the stories and she pm'd back that she was fairly certain this was someone she had been dealing with for awhile and who kept finding their way back.

The trolls that are the fans of "contending" authors or sadly sometimes the authors themselves are the ones bombing just the higher rated stories.

But many just go up and down the list and don't even look at the score, or even the author for that matter.

I have not seen a sweep but just to let my sniper know, my story gained that point back,, so come on down and do your thing.

Yeah, my Halloween entry was hit with what could only have been a solitary 1-star recently, immediately after it edged up to a new spot on the EC top list.
This morning the vote total dropped by one and the score returned to what it had been.

The contests have been going on as long as I've been on the site.

Back in 2001, I didn't even know about them until someone I was exchanging emails with ask me if I was excited to be nominated for three different categories. I didn't win any of them. I won a couple of the monthly contests back around 2004-2005 I think. I don't exactly recall.

Back then, the annual contests were the big thing. There were a few holiday contests - Halloween, Valentine's Day, Winter Holidays. That was pretty much it. That and the monthly contests. Survivor has been around since at least 2001.

The monthly and annuals have pretty much dried up for several years, but the special occasion contests have been getting bigger.

Can someone give me a reader's digest version of Survivor is? It's got forms, lasts a year, and looks... intimidating!

This is the last year....for some dumb reason I tried it. It is really made for people who are prolific...so again I do not know what I was thinking.

In a nutshell, you get points for writing stories. Bonus points for the first one in each category, more bonus points for contests.

It's all about quantity. Quality has zero influence: wins, scores, comments, none of that matters.

So you write as many crappy stories in as many categories as possible, as long as they are more than 750 words, you get your points. By entering all the contests, you get lots of bonus points. Whoever throws the most different types of crap on the wall wins.

That's survivor, in a nutshell.

It is good, in that it forces you to leave your comfort zone and write in areas where you otherwise wouldn't.

And you dragged me along with you. And I dragged MST along with me. I don't know what you were thinking for all of us!

So, Santa fucking elves. Does that sum up this contest?

Is this a metaphor with the Contest-thread-lurking Troll as Santa and story scores are the elves?
Or the trolls are the elves and Santa is the mysterious Sweep algorithm?

I've read 10-12 stories so far and the only one that had Santa fucking someone was mine, and she wasn't an elf. I guess I need to read more.

Wow, that's fascinating! To me, it sounds a little like NANOWRIMO, but with the bonus ability of writing short and rewarded for trying new themes/kinks.

I was thinking of doing a similar exercise to break out of noncon a little and push myself. There is a storied porn actress who did a few porn shoots for Color Climax in the 80s. I was going to use these sets for "inspiration" for different categories. I won't get any points, but I'll hopefully get a little practice and possibly even props from some of the old timer porn connoisseurs who recognize the sets (assuming, of course, that the sets remain recognizable from the stories!).

Thanks Tx Tall Tales! I appreciate the response.

If he does it again tomorrow, I'll send it to Laurel

Good on you. That sounds messed up. I enjoyed your story. It takes a lot of craft to pull off a good noncon tale, especially with a chunky woman and such harsh racial overtones. It's sort of crazy because the interracial kink is hugely racist and objectifying at it's core, but I almost never see any stories with realistic depictions of racism. It's like the one time in your life where it's okay to be racist is when you're writing an interracial story. I guess that's what makes it taboo?

I would have a hard time keeping up, too! I don't write fast, but I write pretty steady. So far that's been enough. I do better with my whole day if I have an in progress story percolating in my head.
