Every morning I watch the little snot blowers walk down the street, headed for school to learn something. They all have back-packs that are bigger than they are. What do you suppose they have in those things? School is only a few hours, not three months.

If they are fourth grade or beyond, books. And a lot of schools no longer have lockers for fear that contraband will be stored in them.

i found its helpful to use my kids as a buffer at annoying family stints.
as soon as someone starts in with a soul-wringing story filled with sighs i can jump out at any moment with a mere "i better check on my son" and no one thinks twice.

My son is the only grandchild on both sides. Trust me, at family gatherings he is NEVER alone for people drooling over him. I swear my mother would watch him sleep if I let her. But when he gets older and zitty I'll try it - thanks.

Then don't go. Or find a way to stop in, say hi, and leave.

Just because they're family doesn't mean you have to endure misery on their behalf.

You don't get plus-points in life for knowingly suffering. You just get lost time. And life is short.

I've said very much this to other people abotu colelagues, work parties, etc, but family isn't optional to me, I suppose. That's my choice entirely, and so I shouldn't whinge about it. Mea culpa.
