The Dog Choice Thread

I went over to the shelter yesterday and interviewed several. These are my top two.

In truth... I'm hoping one of them gets adopted before I make my decision because I can't pick.

i would go with mellow, but that's just me. this baby will be your companion for quite a few years. i wish you the best!

Training a 2 plus year old dog could be interesting, I would go with #1.

How much room do you have?
Is the dog going to be an inside dog all of the time?
Do you have any other pets?
Do you want a very clean house?
Do you have a lot of company?
Do you have a fenced yard?

Yea, but cats don't care what their name is.

Ehh *shrug* my dog's name is booger...he doesn't give a fuck.

I like girl pets...as long as they are fixed they seem to be better at the whole potty training bit. But otherwise it's all about the individual. Wish I could adopt them all =(

I've had shepherds and I have had hounds, though not Catahoulas. Shepherds known where 'home' is, in that they develop (in their minds) what they perceive to be 'theirs' and that's where they stay; it may be part of their herding instinct. They are loyal, my current shelter shepherd never leaves my side, sleeps by my bed at night and by my chair when I'm home and routinely tries to sit in my lap.

I once met a Catahoula who lived on a bison farm. She was full of personality, but they told me she wanted to herd the buffalo, and they feared a hoof would be the end of her. As herding was her breeding, she did seem to know her limits. Other hound breeds, due to breeding, want to hunt, so they are prone to roaming if they get loose.

Both breeds require exercise and toys/playtime to keep them from being bored. They are smart and should be treated much as you would treat a smart, curious toddler.

Good Luck whichever dog you choose.

Do you think we could name her Larry?

Why not!

We had white GSDs in the family for years and they are great dogs for sure. She'll adore you. High energy puts me off for the second little fella. You're gonna need lots of energy to keep me well fucked and well shod when we're spliced remember?

No way. A dog should be at least 60 pounds.

For 50 years my parents had Dachshunds, which convinced me to never have a yappy little dog.

I like big dogs. Something you can throw your arms round. Gonna email you me and the white hounds.

Not worthy of it's own forum, but I've narrowed down the choice of dogs to two:

Dog Number 1

or

Dog Number 2

I really like Dog Number 1, but I'm not sure about a female dog. She's smart and pretty mellow.

Dog Number 2 is the dog I originally went to see, and he's a handsome fellow. Taking him for a walk though... he's very high energy. The keeper said he needs lots of training to keep him under control.

Right now, I'm leaning toward Dog Number 2 but it's a tough decision.

...all this angst over adopting a dog. I can't imagine the stress over adopting a person.

Generally speaking male dogs are more affectionate. Not a hard fast rule but a general one.
Speaking from a multi dog household ...two are not any more work than one :D If they both get along with other dogs...

Good luck and enjoy your new family member (s) regardless of which you pick!!

There's always exceptions to the rules, but I prefer my dogs to be female and my cats male.

You could compromise and name her Laurel.

That's a good idea!

That's actually really funny to me, because my real name is more common for dogs. Loads of people tell me, "Oh, I have a dog named [LaurelsRealName]."

Her friends would make fun of her.

So? They made fun of me too. And look how gud I turnt out!

How's your kitty btw?

The 21 year old hasn't eaten in a couple of weeks. About once a day he comes out of his hidy-hole and gets a drink of water, then goes right back into his spot. He's old and tired, but doesn't seem to be in any pain or discomfort.

The 12 year old is still a hateful little thing.
