Truest shit I ever heard. You can't choose your family, but you could choose who you decide to be in your life. Family supposed to be the closest to you, but they will hurt you the most.

It is always OK to step back and take a break. On the other hand, it is good to make allowances for family. You just have to remember they get no veto power on your life.

I was estranged from my parents for years over some selfish business dealings. My oldest daughter started interacting with my mom which kind of annoyed me. I didn't want to drag my daughter into the whole saga, and if she got some good out of knowing where she comes from it's OK.

Then she starts gently angling for a reunion. I try to be polite about it not running my folks down but explaining that i had some pretty solid reasons for not associating.

She says, "Dad you have hurt my feelings sometimes, but I still talk to you." What do you say to that??

So I reconciled. Was just in time before my dad took ill and passed. My kids got a nice plane trip and a beautiful ocean view vacation out of it, and I am actually close to my mom these days.

We just let bygones be bygones.

I am who I am largely because of who she is, and I like who I turned out to be, so I give her a lot of credit.

The thing about family is, they will be the first to do you dirty. They think because you share the same blood that they should get a pass. It's like if you wouldn't do this shit to nobody else, then why do it to me? And I have a big family, like a real big family. I could think of 200 of us, off the top of my head. So word gets around. And when I discipline him, like I should, I Gotta hear shit from my Mother And aunts and them. "You shouldn't do that, that's your family. Back in my day we never would of did that to each other. Yall kids don't understand the meaning of Blood Is Thicker Than Water." And all that type of shit. But how I'm coming is, if you wouldn't do that to one of these niggas in the streets then why do it to me? And if you are treating my like one of these niggas in the streets, then why can't I treat you the same? And put my hands, arms and feet on you. But at the end of the day I'm the bad guy. (In their eyes). But if you want to take it upon yourself and do what you did. Then imma take it upon myself, and do what I did. End of fucking story.

Now that I think about it, I did choke one of my brothers out once. I don't know is he deserved that level of escalation, but he never started a fight again.
