It's the compulsion to look for the pattern not the actual finding of a pattern that is interesting. Why? What purpose does it serve, given that numbers haven't existed that long?

he's also very long-winded when talking to me about stuff, going off on any number of tangents to 'prove' his point, like walking round a maze that makes sense to him but not to me with a limited attention span for this kind of thing - not deliberately, but he tends to choose just as i've got dinner ready to eat to start, and if i try to streamline the conversation (to stop me glazing over) by interrupting, he more or less needs to start from the beginning again.

as a little kid in nursery, they got the children to use a computer to dress a character in order of most practical... undies, socks, tops, trousers, shoes etc...; the other children struggled with not only order but the physical drag n drop. his turn, he did it in seconds, and the teacher told me she'd never seen it done so quickly. when he was about 4, he knew every turn, secret and trick of the platform sonic game, and could whizz through levels his dad and elder brother struggled with. in school, he could 8x tables no problem, backwards as well as forwards, but found the 2'x difficult. couldn't swim on top of the water, but was a dab hand at underwater - the back-to-front boy. :rolleyes:

Long-winded? You don't say!

My little aspey is really high energy. On the entire autism spectrum some are closed inward but her version is very huggy and chatty. Being a cute little blond girl that looks about half her actual age because she is so small makes her a delight to meet. Kind of a handful to parent as it sounds like you experience.
 
If only the 7 had been a 9 or the 9 a 7, this would be interesting. Better still would have been if both had been 8's.
