Marion Barry, an icon of D.C. politics good and bad for more than 40 years, has died at age 78.

"It is with deep regret that the family of former four-time D.C. Mayor, and Ward 8 City Councilman, Marion S. Barry, Jr., announces that he has passed," read a statement early Sunday from Barry's family.

Barry had been hospitalized at Howard University Hospital Thursday after complaining of a urinary tract infection. He was released Saturday, and family members said he seemed to feel well. "In his own words, he was 'fantabulous' -- his words, not mine," said Barry spokeswoman LaToya Foster at an early-morning press conference at United Medical Center.

Love him or hate him, he fought hard for his constituents.

He made corruption a family word. Crack fixing is no longer just the roads and bridges. The "Remade man with African Roots" phase was special.

But his people loved him so who is to say he wasn't good for the city.

He also started the building boom downtown. Lots of folks made money when he was in charge.

He's responsible for one of my favourite ever quotes: If you leave out all the murders, DC has a really low crime rate.

Don't forget these winners -

"What right does congress have to go around making laws just because they deem it necessary?"

"I am a great mayor. I am a Christian man. I am an intelligent man. I am a deeply educated man. I am a humble man."

And last but never forgotten....

"First, it was a strip bar, it was not an erotic club. And second, what can I say? Im a night owl."

Yup, great man. Great city.

Can't let a little thing like crack addiction keep you down. All politicians should be thrown in the wood chipper, feet first.

Maybe a little harsh.

I think so. He had a lot of personal failings, but he also did a lot for the city.

With his continual election, despite his personal and civic failures he is a great example of what happens when "lors of people make a lot of money" as a result of a bad practice known as democracy.

"Lots of people' lived in violence and poverty his entire reign.

but who can forget. "The Bitch set me up!"

When we moved to Washington, Barry was a young city councilman, and I swear people talked about him like they talked about Obama and Cory Booker three decades later. Then he survived a shooting in the Muslim hostage crisis in 1977, and that raised his profile even more. Believe it or not, he first won the mayor's race in 1978 because the white community got behind him, thanks to the endorsement of the Post.

His inability to deal with success was a shame for him, and for D.C.

Marion is feminine. Marie, Maria. I've an aunt Marion.

To be fair, or at least according to my Irish lover, black people "steal" Irish names, and apply them inappropriately when naming their kids. Like he told me he has a brother named Tyrone and I was like  you have a black brother? He said no, Tyrone is an IRISH name like Tyrion. :confused:I think African Americans got their Irish names from either...oh never mind.
