Obama's customers would have no issue at all if lying to the non-customers helped make the sale. They want the product. The interesting thing here is the non-customers didn't buy it. It was sold by democrats to democrats.

My take on it?

Over the years I've watched the mentality of the electorate change, and not for the better. Far too many now view politics as if it's football or some other sporting contest. And this is not necessarily restricted to the liberal, there are more than enough republicans out there with the same mind set. The view is that the game is over as soon as the bill/act is signed. You can crow/bitch on Monday but by Tuesday you're supposed to forget about last Sunday's game and start jawboning about the up coming game. Neither the sports mentality groups acknowledge that when it comes to politics the game is never over.

Both of the sports mentality groups seem to forget what the role of the citizen is in all of this. During the campaigns and subsequent elections you can be as partisan as you want to be, that's what the contests are all about. But once the election is over it is the citizens role to become the referee.

In 1974 Nixon was run out of office under threat of impeachment for lying to the American people. In 1999 Clinton was not impeached for lying to American people. The Clinton ordeal was a clear signal that lying to the public was perfectly OK.

Somewhere between 1974 and 1999 the citizen forgot, or abstained, from it's role as referee.

I'm not disagreeing with your overall premise, but I think the difference between 1974 and 1999 was more in the character of the two men involved.

And just for clarity, Clinton was impeached. He just wasn't found guilty by the Senate, an outcome he was sure of, so he stayed in office. Votes in both the House and Senate went virtually along party lines. Guilt or innocence had little to do with the outcome. "Party first" is the message that the electorate really learned from that fiasco, and sadly you're correct in that the electorate seems to have given up on the notion that they can do anything about it.
