Mitch’s first big headache: How to convince conservatives he can’t “repeal Obamacare”

Gerrymandering has a lot to do with that, of course, the Pubs have been very vigorous in locking in their temporary institutional advantages. Also, 60% of governors can still represent a closely divided electorate, if, e.g., each of them won by only 3-4% or so.

Compare aggregate votes cast nationwide for Dem and Pub candidates, and I think you'll find the margin shrinks.

Come to Illinois and talk to us about GOP gerrymandering.

There are intellectually honest people on the left who acknowledge both sides play the game.

Of course they do, but lately the Dems are much more sinned against than sinning in this regard.

No matter who does it more or who benefits more, I think we should cut the knot, take the redistricting function away from the state legislatures entirely and give it to some kind of nonpartisan commissions. That's how they do it in Canada.

Yes, you're the acknowledged master of Balance Fallacy.

Republicans might do something 90-95% of the time, but if Democrats do something 5-10%, that's enough for you and your fellow Not-Republicans to say "See? BOTH SIDES DO IT! Derp! Derp! Derp!"

You're right. Most of the time, Republicans do things such as go to school, get married, work, pay taxes, pay bills, etc. Democrats do things of that sort much less often. :(

DUMZ, the dying PARTY of RICH WHITE RACISTS

WELL, ANOTHER DEM TALKING POINT BITES THE DUST: Poll: Americans Want GOP Congress, Not Obama, to Set National Agenda. “Times have changed. A new Gallup poll finds that a large majority of Americans would like the Republican-controlled Congress, rather than President Obama, to set the direction for the country in the coming year, a marked change from 2012, when a slim majority said they preferred for Obama to guide the agenda.”

Elbridge Gerry was a Democrat(ic-Republican).

You know, party of (William) Jefferson (Clinton) and all that jazz.

Just sayin' . . . .

Judging from your posts, you went to school far less than you republican cohort, and I'd wager you haven't held a paying job in a long time, probably over a decade.

This thread cements my opinion that there are uninformed voters roaming the earth. I don't like either party but see the value in each. Stop listening to Hillbilly Heroin Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Oil Money Beck or Chris I spit as I talk Matthews and research for yourselves. We are sliding into the 3rd World and pretty soon Bangladesh will look like paradise.

There is a lot of volume, but not much is being said

With automation cutting more jobs everyday and the rise of drones in the military, we are facing a new situation. For the first time in the history of mankind the rich don't need the rest of us. We (everyone who isn't rich) have become dead weight. They don't need us in their factories, farms or their armies. Automated plants can provide everything they need and their missile defenses and drones can protect them.

Lets say, just for the fun of it, that the top one percent decides to let the bottom ninety percent sink or swim on their own. They refuse to pay any taxes that support or help. The poor can't find work and since the taxes are down to nothing, there are no safety nets. The slums start to grow in america like they do now in the third world.

Knowing how the right looks at healthcare, I am thinking that there would be little or none available to the poor souls who live in the slums surrounding the shrinking cities. It would only be a matter of time until the overcrowded and unhealthy conditions would start diseases. How long would it take before the bottom ninety percent wasted away?

Could it be that I and all my liberal friends are standing in the way of progress. I have read that the black plague that wiped out so much of european humanity also set the stage for the industrial revolution. The abundance of food and housing made for a better life for everyone and resulted in betterment for all mankind.

Back in the sixties there were countless books and movies written about how the earth would be changed by atomic wars. They all painted a pretty gloomy picture but at the end the survivors, the few that made it, walked out into the sunlit plains of a new world. In one movie the man and the woman were named adam and eve.

This view that good results can come from bad events are part of human nature. So in the spirit of looking for the sliver lining of this dark cloud we are under, I am going to think of the recent republican victory as being like the black plague, or a nuclear war. Just a necessary evil that paves the way toward a greater good.

You cannot look at the republican party as a force for evil or good. They, as well as the democrats, are no more than the left and right rein in the hands of the wealthy as they drive the wagon the rest of us have been pulling. But now they have automated power, they don't need us to pull them anymore. we can't keep up and now dead weight slowing them down.

The real concern is what the rich will decide to do with all this dead weight. Now that there is only one man who stands in their way, and he might be in their pocket as well since he has never revealed himself to be a true liberal.

We were like a kid trying to climb a greased flag pole. We had hoped to reach the flag and win freedom and happiness for all but we lost our grip and now we are slipping down slowly but surely. How far down will we descend? Where will it stop?
We should know pretty soon now.

Despite what now seems to be habitual hyperbolic emotionalism naturally seeping from your fingertips...

...I live to believe those sweet, sweet cheeks in that av do exist somewhere, that my lips will someday find their way home.

The rich need the rest of us not to revolt, so that they can keep their house of cards intact... They will work on making sure we have just enough to remain complacent. That's why the medicare laden teabaggers are all on public assistance. Most have fixed incomes, but as long as the 1% keeps feeding them just enough table scraps, they'll lick their master's hand.
