Pretty interesting web site. Which gives you info on the area you live in.

http://www.esri.com/data/esri_data/ziptapestry

Like it or not, where you decide to live often says a lot about you.
You're not totally defined by your zip code, but a website spotted by Reddit seeks to show people what zip codes say about the average demographic, culture, and lifestyle in one's area.

Here's how it works:

The "Zip Lookup" tool is powered by Esri, a geographic-information firm based in California.

Just head to the website, type in your zip code, and you'll be greeted with a breakdown of your zip code's demographic characteristics based on Esri's "Tapestry" technology, which consists of 67 unique market segment classifications.

The percentage breakdown shows you the mixture of different classifications?

Here's what mine says ...

Young, mobile, educated, or still in school, we live alone or with a roommate in rented apartments or condos in the center of the city. Long hours and hard work don't deter us; we're willing to take risks to get to the top of our professions. Most of our income goes for rent, fashions, and the latest technology; we use our cell phones and computers every day for news, entertainment, shopping, and social media. We live close to our jobs so we can either walk to work or take a cab. We buy groceries at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's and shop for clothes at Banana Republic, Nordstrom, and Gap. We practice yoga, go skiing, and attend Pilates sessions. -

Idiots that made that website apparently do not have access to property tax rolls. Says that 26% of us are "Dreamers" meaning, apparently foreign born. We have lots of Hispanics but nowhere near 25% were not born and raised here for generations.

It talks about how hard these "foreigners" worked to achieve home-ownership.

The ENTIRE zip code is owned by the company and rented out ridiculously cheap which is why the housing list is at times a two year wait.

Mine says......why would anyone in their right mind live where you do?

Mine doesn't apply. Everything jabbered on about married couples and family.

I have neither.

Interesting. Very accurate, in my case.

It's the C5....

On another note mine was pretty funny...."The Great Outdoors"

CMT and FOX news are apparently favorites out in BFE Humboldt California....BAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA

I bet the FOX news viewers in this county don't break 1% of the population.

Mine says I watch Fox News.

Ahahaaa. I don't watch the news.

It's the Alaska and or rural bit....got to be...which the more I look at AK the more jelly I get of all the outdoor winning....except the skeeters, so not jelly of those.

Part of me is saying "wait till it's legal there" the other part says "that far out there is no one to bust your balls for it." the another part is saying "Dude you live on a lil ranch in Humboldt, wtf ? Don't be stupid stay put and enjoy the good life." but the moving around bit is kind of addicting.

We shall see... if the drought keeps up for too many more years I'll be heading north again. Maybe AK if botanygirl is game.

It failed around here by about 3%. Thanks, Sheldon Adelson. And thanks, Citizens United.

We've achieved our corporate career goals and can now either consult or operate our own businesses. We're married couples with older children or without children. Every home maintenance chore in our lavish homes is handled by a variety of contracted services. We can indulge ourselves in personal services at upscale salons, spas, and fitness centers, and shop at high-end retailers for anything we desire. We travel frequently, sparing no expense in taking luxury vacations or visiting our second homes in the US and overseas. Evenings and weekends are filled with opera, classical music concerts, charity dinners, and shopping. We support the arts and other charities, read to expand our knowledge, and depend on the Internet, radio, and newspapers for information. Spending time with family and a small circle of close friends is a priority.

Isn't most home grown food cooked at home? What's CMT? Country music channel? I can't stand country. Online entertainment, is more than occasionally in the winter.

Who are these creative writers making this crap up? This is hilarious.

"26% The Great Outdoors
Small towns and rural communities of single-family houses, mobile homes, and vacation homes in the Northeast, South, and West are where you'll find our neighborhoods. Our lives are modest, our needs are simple, and our demands are few. Retirement investments and Social Security payments help to support us; jobs require longer commutes from home to support a peaceful existence in the country. A vacation home or other real estate is a more appealing investment than stocks. Pet dogs or cats are part of the family. We're very cost-conscious and relatively self-sufficient: we maintain our vehicles and lawns, and will tackle home improvement and remodeling projects. Our vegetable gardens provide home-grown food which we cook at home. Technology isn't important; we may go online occasionally for entertainment and shopping. The History Channel, CMT, and Fox News are favorite TV channels viewed via satellite."

Lolz

What'd you look up?

I looked around Fairbanks, Homer, Anchorage and Juneau. Rural little towns around them....

The houses aren't bad (coming from CA anyhow) but I was expecting cheaper land prices with the population density as low as it is.

That is my favorite....LOL as if amazon wasn't the greatest thing EVER for folks in the sticks. Need something? Fed ex will have that shit on your door step in 24 hrs. no burning fuel/daylight chasing some BS part/widgitathinggy/clothes etc all over the town just to find out it's special order and you have to take another day and tank of fuel to come back in a few days to pick the silly thing up.

Nope...

Click click click...shit will be here in the morning, can't beat that kind of awesome.

Amazon and the internet are the AWESOME.....I'm part of the "I live in the boonies" tapestry and I approve this message.

Online shopping is the only way to go, or else I'm limited to just a couple big box stores.

Fairbanks??! No one wants to live in Fairbanks. Brrr...and, dark! Juneau is high because land is so limited. It's literally a seaside town. Anywhere between Anchorage and Homer usually is reasonable if you aren't getting all choosy with riverside or oceanside. Lakeside's aren't usually too bad if you don't mind a 20-30 min drive to town.

mine said something about conservative families shopping at walmart and playing video games online, while getting news from the tele.

Oh I don't mind that kind of drive...it's 50 for me now if I don't get stuck behind some slow poke log truck going down the mountain.

Yea I was looking at the fairbanks climate info....also it's pretty flat there, I'm a big fan of texture so you're right it looks like anchorage<-> Homer looks to be the sweet spot.

Some beautiful chunks of land for sale up there.

It's a fun dream I wouldn't mind pursuing in the next decade.

Since I don't live in the US, doesn't work for me.

I'm pretty sure what my postal code says about me is fairly accurate. I'm a fairly typical resident of my area. Maybe a bit younger than average... by about a decade.
