Nearly every American who is ignorant about Africa is also ignorant about Europe (that country sucks), Scandinavia (somewhere up there), Asia (isn't that Japan?) and without a label they can't properly mark the state names on a map.




*Australia and South America intentionally ignored in this post because they don't count except for Argentina where they've got oil and sometimes Brazil when the World Cup is there.

** Australia never counts and I'd bet that not 1 in 10 Americans could tell you where New Zealand is without reference.

For a lot of people, what's outside their world isn't really important. Until very late in life, my parents had never been further than 100 miles from their home, and had never been on an airplane. They were very involved in their local community and the wider-world didn't really have an impact on their day-to-day lives.

In all fairness, a majority of Africans are probably horribly ignorant about America as well.

To a specific extent, I'll reckon. But keep in mind we broadcast ourselves to the rest of the world like crazy and people soak it in, constantly. Our media is hyper-loaded with as many truths about America right alongside the many constructed falsehoods.
