Stephen Colbert brutally humiliates Anita Sarkeesian in front of the world

The humiliation came when he asked her:
"Can you name three examples of misogynistic games?"

"Uh uh uh ummmmm"

LAWL

(Hint: she previously admitted to not even PLAYING the games she criticized)

I'm a girl. I play video games. A lot of them. But I don't see this woman's argument. It *is* a male dominated industry. Therefore they *do* make a lot of games with men's interests more in mind than women's. This doesn't bother me. It's just the truth. I'm not going to ask them to change/feminize the industry just because I want to stand on my little soapbox and demand it's mysogeny. It's not.

I much prefer games where you can assume the gender you want. Mass Effect, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, etc. are great examples. Oh and those titles also avoid overusing the damsel-in-distress effect, too. Plus while many games feature the mass killing of males by the bazillions, those 3 games are pretty egalitarian about that.

There's probably plenty of legitimate stuff to say about sexism in video games but at the same time there are VERY popular games that destroy all the sexist tropes. Anita Sarkeesian left those out in her poorly-researched diatribes.

The REAL problem is that people started sending her death threats, and the senders of these threats have yet to get cuffed. The FBI simply isn't doing its damned job.

Of course her CRITICS are also receiving actual threats in US Mail - like one guy got a knife mailed to him with the message "kill yourself." Anita Sarkeesian never got anything like that. The FBI doesn't seem to be investigating that, either.

I like games where I can play a girl. I play girls in all 3 of those, fallout, elder scrolls, and mass effect, except one play through for mass effect 2 because I was pissed a female couldn't romance jack. Lol. If I have the option of playing a female character, I usually will. But I wouldn't say I much prefer games like that, it depends on the story. I loved the call of duty ghosts campaign, the assassins creed series, spinter cell, GTA 5, even. I have to say though, really well thought out female characters are always a plus. I loooooved Lara Croft in the new tomb raider and Ellie in The Last of Us.

I totally think this woman should NOT have received any death threats or harassment, but the fact that's coming from guys doesn't really mean anything. There are bad people out there, just as much women as men. And while I don't agree with her position and don't want the industry to start catering everything to women, I don't think it's right for anyone to attack her, verbally or otherwise, male or female, and those that do deserve to be punished, but it really seems to me that she just likes the attention for standing up for something, and the issue itself doesn't matter to her.

And you know what, I never heard of anyone complaining about the fact that the protagonist of Tomb Raider - Lara Croft - was a woman. "Beyond Good and Evil" is another awesome game with a female protagonist - and nobody crapped on that either. Did anyone bitch about the Metroid series having a woman protagonist? Anita didn't mention any of those. I'm thinking of a term for her research... Confirmation Bias. And Sarah Kerrigan in Starcraft/Starcraft II... who can forget her?

And you know what, I personally liked Bullet Witch, too. *ducks low*

Anita likes the attention, yes, but more than that, she likes the money. The $100,000 that she received for her poorly made videos, that I hear are now even making their fraudulent way into colleges. She's no doubt making money doing speaking engagements and all kinds of stuff. Not bad for someone who doesn't even play video games, I suppose. Gotta do something in today's economy. *shrug*

You're right.

I think there can be sexism in games, but I don't consider a lot of things in them sexist that other people do. Like big jiggly boobs. That's not sexist. Women in little clothing, or a damsel in distress isn't sexist. The last thing I've seen in game that I actually considered sexist were various things in Duke Nukem Forever, like the boobs you can actually slap.

But to go after video games for it doesn't make sense to me. There's only sexism in video games because it exists in the real world first.

And she's not concered with the games that do have the qalities she likes. She wants the ones she doesn't like to change. But demanding everything change because it doesn't cater to women isn't equality. Having equal rights is one thing. But insisting that boys change the structure of their entertainment because a girl doesn't like it isn't equality, that's female domination. That's sexist the other way around. That's like telling a group of scrapbooking women that they need to include pictures of man stuff, because it's sexist that their hobby is catering to women.

It's Jack Thompson all over again. "Violent games makes violent people" is now "Misogyny in games makes misogynist people".

I'm in favor of more women game developers. The rub is how to get them into the industry.

On a side note: this shit that misogynists hurled at Jessica "Diana Allers" Chobot made my blood boil. I liked her character and I regret not knowing this giantbomb ragefest was going on. "What a dumb bitch whore" and that other crap they posted there, now that I just don't get. THIS kind of misogyny we need to address in the gamer community, and it is NOT at all rare.
