OOC: Hello all! I've been away for awhile, but the writing bug always eventually brings me back. :p

Figured that, being a bit of a Walking Dead fan, and also in the spirit of Halloween, it'd be fun to start a Walking Dead RP thread...I'm sure it has already most likely been done before, given the popularity of the show, but never hurts to revisit a theme from a new point of view. This will be an open thread, and anyone can join, but I do have a couple requests.

First, please do not make one or two sentence posts...as a storyteller, it's our job to be descriptive in order to make the story come alive, and that can't be done with someone making one sentence posts. In short, if you cannot post coherent, substantial posts, I'd rather not have you post at all.

Next, I would appreciate a somewhat detailed character profile posted here (or sent to me via PM if you feel more comfortable doing that) before posting in the actual IC story thread...and please make the character your own, and do not use any of the existing Walking Dead characters. I don't mind a bit of emulation, but let's not carbon copy characters from the comic books or the show...use a bit of creativity, originality, and imagination.

Once we have a few interested parties who've posted character bios, I'll start up the IC thread.

**********

Settling and Timeframe:

Rather than the story being set near Atlanta, like in the TV show, I decided that to start out with I'd place the setting in the midwest, right along the Mississippi River on the Wisconsin/Minnesota border (thought that it'd be interesting to see how the walkers and survivors would handle a colder climate, and living in that area, I am familiar with the locale), but as the story progresses, it may lead to other locations...we'll see what happens. The will be less than a year after the initial outbreak...will say it is early spring and the characters have just survived through a long winter. The characters may have been travelling together for a short time...or perhaps they don't yet know each other. Either way makes for good RP. :)

Character Bio: Nick Hartner

Appearance:

Nick is in his late twenties, roughly six feet tall and rather thin, due to lack of availability of food over the winter months. He has long, bedraggled brown hair and beard, and deep blue eyes which carry a haunted look that most survivors now carry due to losing people they've cared about over the past year since the outbreak began. He is dressed in warmer clothing, due to the colder weather, and carries a large backpack for supplies. He has a hatchet strapped to his backpack, and also carries a rifle strapped to his back as well, a .30/.30 he used to use for deer hunting before everything went to hell. Hidden under his jacket in a shoulder holster, he carries a Beretta. On his belt, is a large hunting knife.

**********

Background:

Nick grew up an avid outdoorsman...when he was a kid, he was in the boy scouts, and loved camping, fishing, and wilderness exploring. As a young teenager, he also developed a love of hunting as well, especially for the white-tailed deer in the area. It was this love of hunting that initially may have saved him...he had an old hunting cabin in the woods he would go to during hunting season, and when the outbreak began, he and his family fled civilization and made for the cabin.

At first, Nick and his family were fairly safe and comfortable...there was a small stream near the cabin for fresh water, and he had stocked up the cabin with canned food for his yearly hunting trips...but eventually food kept at the cabin ran low, and he, his wife, and their two young daughters subsisted on what Nick could hunt to make it last. Over the winter, game became scarce as the freezing temperatures loomed and he had more and more trouble feeding his family. At first, Nick took his jeep into the small town nearby in order to scavenge supplies, but as winter roared in and the vehicle ran out of gas, he was unable to make these supply runs. Only the wood stove in the cabin prevented he and his family from freezing to death, and many nights they would go to bed hungry...but this bitter cold and deep snow also helped prevent walkers from discovering their cabin.

Once the colder weather finally started to turn to spring, Nick again started to make supply runs, this time on foot...but more and more often with this warming weather, the walkers would now range out further and it became more dangerous. He didn't give much thought to walkers finding the cabin...making it through the winter had given him a false sense of security. He soon tragically learned the error of this...it was while he was on a supply run, that walkers found the cabin, and he lost his family... returning to find the cabin overrun, and the walkers feasting on them. Overcome with grief, he fled into the woods, barely escaping with his life.

In the weeks since losing his family, Nick had been finding shelter where he could, hiding out caves, abandoned cars, and vacant buildings. The crushing guilt, surviving while his family had not, and the weight of being utterly alone, nearly caused him to give up. It was shortly after that he came upon other survivors and found a new reason to keep going...

Important Added Note...Please Read!

If someone stops posting in the story, without any explanation in this OOC thread, after a week at most, the story will move forward and others will act as if the character was separated somehow (supply run, scouting ahead, etc). If the character doesn't post again sometime between two weeks and a month, it will be assumed that character is fair game to be eaten in our storyline. If a previous writer whose character has been eaten in the story wants to return thereafter, it should be with a new character, with the profile to again be added here. Thanks! :)

Character - Ashley Shepard

Apperance:
Ashley is a young women, aged 19. She has long blonde hair and deep hazel eyes that are a mix of blue and green. She is 5"2" so rather short. Cup size is 32 D and she has a curvy ass. Her weight is 53 KG. Her current clothing is a red tight tank top and a pair of black skinny jeans that have various rips and tears in them. The weapons she carries are a pair of colt revolvers and her deadly machete.

Background: Ashley was one of the popular girls in school but also rather smart. She had just finished her final year at high school and decided to go on a holiday to the USA and she would visit her sister that currently resided over there. So Ashley went from Australia to the United States. She found it really weird at first but her sister Hannah made her feel comfortable.

About a month after she arrived is when the outbreak happened. Alot of people were skeptical at first of this apparent 'zombie apocalypse' but Ashley sure wasn't when it hit the city she was staying at. These disgusting creatures roaming the streets in a massive hoard ripping civilians to shreds. Ashley and her sister fled the city that night.

They moved to a suburban area and holled up in abandoned house, it did have a decent amount of food and supplies. The area had a few of the walkers moving around in the neighborhood and a fair amount of people that had fled their homes. Ashley and Hannah stayed at this house for a week. Neither of them had no idea what to do or where to go.

After a few more days the pair of sisters decided they had to move on from this house due to the ever growing walkers around. They traveled and walked for days, staying in an array of different locations. They just couldn't find a safe place any where they went. Hannah was complaning and emotionally distraught at the whole thing that was happening. Ashley calmed her through the days the walked, telling her things would be okay and reminiscing on happy memories they had when they where young children. But one morning when Ashley woke she saw her sister.... with a bullet in her head and the gun in her hand along with a note that only said "I'm Sorry".

Ever since then Ashley rarely sleeps and just spends her time on her lonesome, traveling looking for safe haven

Nikki Sloan

Character Description:
Nikki is a 24 year old Asian/Latina standing 5'5" and weighing 111lbs. She has one kelly green eye and one ice Blue eye, inherited from her maternal grandfather. Her skin is a light creamy brown (think cafe ole) like her cuban fathers. Her facial features match the delicate Japenese features of her mother. She is friendly and trusting, once she gets to know people. Until them the reserved nature of her Japenese ancestry makes strangers think she's stuck up. She is slender but not skinny with a 30B-20-29 figure.

Bio:
Nikki was born in Montana. Her parents were survivalists, and using their moderate income from her fathers Army Navy Shop and his medical pension from the Army, they built an underground shelter with a stock of food and ammo to last the family several years.

From an early age, Nikki was taught how to shoot, hunt, trap, fish and build shelters. She is an excellent marksman, and knows about plants and insects. What to eat and what not to eat in the wild.

Nikki considers herself an all American girl. She was on the HS cheer squad and debate team. She missed valdvictorian by less than .01% points. She was accepted to her first choice for college, and graduated cum laude with a degree in Zoology and a minor in botany.

After college she got a job working for the FWS evaluating the numbers of birds and other animals at Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge. This was a long term project lasting over a year, and she had minimal contact with visitors to the park. Once a month she took her horse and cart to the landing and loaded up on supplies. The first hint of trouble came when her scheduled resupply was late and no one visited the park for several days.

Nikki was surprised the ranger station was empty and she couldn't get any reception on the stations radio or TV. She tried using the base station and couldn't raise anyone. The island was 6 miles offshore and the winter was coming. Nikki wasn't equipped for the cold weather, so she used her knowledge and tools to build a sturdy craft to carry her and her horse from the island to the mainland.

Once she was ashore, she didn't see any signs of human life. As night fell she found an old farmhouse. As she approached, an elderly man with a shotgun told her to leave. After convincing him she wasn't a threat, he found out she had no idea what was happening. He explained to her about the outbreak. She was in disbelief until an undead solider tried to eat her beloved horse, Clip Clop. Fortunatly the old farmer, Reese, was an excellent shot and gave the walker mercy.

She stayed the winter on the farm helping the old man and his pet pit bull, shadow (the local rat hunting champion), keep it safe. She went out to scavange supplies and met several other survivors. Some came with her to the farm, others choose to stay where they were. One night the old man died from the cold and turned. He attacked and killed everyone except Nikki who escaped into the forest. Returning to the farm the next day she gave mercy to her friends, and continued to survive, but stopped bringing strangers to the farm.

The farmer was a ham radio operator, using a solar charger FWS gave her to charge her night vision goggles, she was able to contact her parents and find out they were alive in their shelter. She promised to make her way to them when the weather warmed up. They keep in contact 3 days a week.

She set out from the farm toward the end of winter, hoping the cold would make the walkers slower, and less active allowing her to get across MA and hopefully NY before spring thawed the world out. She gathered her supplies and started walking using Clip Clop as a pack horse (Although she had put a saddle on him in case she needed to get out of dodge) and Shadow trailed behind.

She slowly made her way West, mostly walking to make sure Clip Clop didn't tire out in case of trouble. Shadow proved his worth by waking her at night when walkers were near.

She avoided both the living and the dead, and kept moving west. When the dead took an interest in her, she would kill them with her edged weapons or bow, which she also used to hunt small game.

She followed rivers inland toward The Great Lakes, avoiding population centers. She found a marina with several decent boats that could carry her and the animals across the Great Lakes. As they cast off she was able to relax for the first time in over a month, except for her daily landings so Clip Clop and Shadow could eat and drink.

She made it all the way to the southern end of Lake superior. She beached the boat, Loaded Clip Clop and made her way toward Wisconsin...

The Walking Dead is very cool, I would like to play.

Character:
Mathilda Martinsen

Description:
Appearance:
5'9 tall, a bit plump, 45 years old.
Light blond, short hair with a bit of white in it, blue eyes and in a roundish face.

Character:
Trusting, welcoming and open, albeit a bit shy.
Not afraid of hard or dirty work, a bookworm, and adept at knitting, cooking, sewing and crocheting.

Background:
Mathilda studied to become a schoolteacher when she became pregnant, married and became a mother and housewife. Since the children (a second one followed soon) went to kindergarten, she volunteers in several projects like teaching dutch to foreigners and teaching writing and reading to analphabetics.

She came to the US with her husband for a second honeymoon. They rented a mobile home to travel around some national parks. They decided to favor the less know parks over the big ones, and since they wanted to travel along some of the big lakes too, they found themselves in the upper peninsula of Michigan, close to Wisconsin, when things started to go wrong.

For a while they formed a 'community' with some other campers deep in the woods. They learned some survival skills, they raided supermarkets, they lost some people and at before the winter the group broke apart.

Mathilda and her husband took a family of four (father, two young sons and a teenage daughter) in their camper and they decided to move west for as far as the last three liters of gas in the tank would take them, or until they found a house or farm they could stay for the winter.

They ran out off gas before they found a safe place and continued on foot, carrying as much of their possessions on their backs as possible. Mathilda's husband and the youngest boy felt victims to walkers when they entered a small town. The rest however could safe themselves in a house -although the girl had to pull Mathilda inside when she saw her husband had fallen- where they even found canned food for a day or two, and vegetables in the garden. The four decided to stay the winter there when they found the town empty of inhabitants other than walkers, they found quite some canned food and homemade preserves, as well as more vegetables and fruit in other gardens.

Late in the winter they got 'visited' by a group of bikers who decided to stay. They put up with it, but when the temperatures rose, Mathilda packed her bag and left.

I would like to join, but I won't be able to put up a bio till a little later.

OP lets start the RP, OK. If no one gets it started, by tomorrow night, I will set up a base camp somewhere allowing others find me.

JadeKnight welcome and post that Bio when you can. we'll need help to survive the onslaught about to happen...

Yup...think we have enough to get started. Thanks everyone, for joining in. Will get this started up and anyone wanting to join in is more than welcome to join after the story is started, as long as they post here in the OOC first and won't break story continuity. We'll use this thread to discuss story direction, as well as to share individual input for our posts.

Would love to put our heads together and figure direction here...I DO have a few ideas. Thinking once the characters all meet up, that best course of action for moving the story forward might be to see if the character of Nikki would be amiable to allow the others to accompany her to her parents' shelter, as that seems the most promising place to allow for survival...but of course, we'd have to earn her trust enough where she'd be willing to share that kind of information, and given some of the bad and hostile folks that she might have had run-ins with previously, that may be harder than it seems. :)

Here's my char Bio. If anything needs to be changed, let me know.

Character Appearance:

Jack Coleman is a 27 year old white male who stands about 5'11” and weighs 169 lbs. His brown hair is cropped close in the standard military crew cut and dark green eyes. He keeps himself in shape, more toned than muscular. He is friendly for the most part, but willing to take charge when needed.

Background:

Jack grew up in Northern Wisconsin, part of a outdoor loving family. He was taught how to live off the land from an early age, hunt with the rifle and bow and arrow, and cave exploration. He joined the scouts during middle school and earned his Eagle just before his 18th birthday. He went to earn a bachelor's degree in Law Enforcement, but delayed going into a job in that field to go into the military.

After two years of active duty in the military, Jack joined the Wisconsin Guard. He was assigned to an MP unit whose armory was located a few miles outside Madison. The armory was built with security in mind, a ten foot chain fence topped with razor wire ringing the property.

A couple of days after the outbreak started, his unit was assigned to protect the local hospital from looters and keep law and order during what was suppose to be a short tour of duty. However the armory couldn't be left unattended, so his team of three was assigned to guard the armory. Two weeks of guard duty had passed when the resupply runs for the unit stopped. He stayed at the armory while the two members of his team went to check on the situation. Everyone at the hospital had been killed or ran away to save themselves. One team member got ambushed and killed by a group of walkers while the second one decided to head home to find his family.

Since his parents had died while he was in college, and Jack never tried to date anyone till that point, he had no one to check on. He decided to stay at the armory for the winter since the place would be secure from any walkers and visitors. He had more than enough supplies in the armory to survive himself for several months on MREs. He supplemented his diet with wildlife around the area, learning how to avoid the walkers as he hunted.

Four military vehicles had been left, two Humvees, an MRAP, and a full tanker truck. When he went into town to pick up any supplies the armory didn't have, he took the Humvees, using them as transportation and distraction tactics. Whenever he came to an area, he would leave the truck running as he climbed out the hatch on top. He had created a makeshift spear by combining an ice pick and broom handle. As the walkers gathered around, he jabbed them in their heads and piled them up in large piles before going to scavenge.

By the time spring rolled around, Jack was ready to try and get out of the armory permanently. Ir was nice and secure, but he was itching to move on and perhaps find other survivors. So he loaded up the MRAP and headed out on the road.

Oh sure first you steal my equipment list, then you change it so that there's no
.45acp, 12ga or 30-30 rounds I can use, and no extra weapons you could give me that can use the 7.62 you do bring. Thanks... :D

(For those that can't tell I'm just teasing our fellow survivor...)

heh, I just used the standard army eq, which I am myself. :p

Well, there's more I could'va added, but wanted to take in account diminishing supply and that stuff. Added duct tape. And I brought an extra M4 and pistol. The 240B is a heavy machine gun, that'll probably stay mounted on the MRAP, unless someone will want to carry the big thing.

great

Hey guys just wanted to say great job. A few tweaking and its as good as the show. In my honest opinion. Looking forward to see where it goes. Like that its a mixed crowd and such.

go with it

The last part I put in .I was thinking either it was alive and.not one of us. Or it could've.been a walker and my mind is playing tricks on me. Your call

nevermind

I went ahead and made the victim a walker. Where has Nick been.? I was gonna say we should setup a time frame on how long someone is gone and either have them killed off or they disappear. Wanted to see what everybody thinks. I don't want to single Nick out cause he is the one that started it. So maybe see what he thinks. Hate having to wait on someone's return. I. I know we all have lives outside and such. Just don't want this to come to a stand still.hope I'm not sounding harsh.

Generally speaking in te few group RP's I've done anyone who doesn't post for awhile is assumed they have been following along with the group. Like in thefirst season of the show, Sophia was shown only 2 or 3 times yet she wa salways around. Just sayin'

I think te RP should go forward and when any member posts they post and when they don't we keep it going.

ANyone else have a thought?
