Problem setting profile avatar

I have a problem setting the avatar image on my profile.
According to the Main Profile settings page, it should be a 75x75 image, either jpeg, png or gif.

I have tried several sizes and types and every time I get the message
'Unable to set User Avatar, please try again.'
For instance, see the attached image.

Anybody got an idea what is wrong?

I recommend that you save it as a jpeg since it's a photo. If it was clipart, then save it as a gif.
