I always like it when other people have cooked with it. And I love gumbo. I've just never made anything with it myself. So do you just chop it and throw it in, or does it need other preparation before you add it to the soup?

Okra acts as a thickener to give gumbo that thick consistency. If you don't want to use okra, you can use file (pronounced fee-lay). File comes from sassafras.
