You Make The Call: Ella Fitzgerald Vs. Billie Holiday

i love them both, but billie's voice holds a more haunting quality for me. i don't like some of the music she sang to, but that voice... *shakes head*

Ella sounded like an adult. I have heard some recordings of Billie and her voice sounded like that of a child.

Their styles are so different I wouldn't compare them. I choose Ella though. Saw her 2 times at radio city.

Mad respect for Billie, forever. But Ella had more play for me growing up and is always getting rotation in my iTunes.

Ella 2, Billie 1

They have very different styles. But, when discussion turns to the greatest jazz vocalists, their names are the two most often mentioned, so that's why I matched them up.

Billie. Ella had the better voice but no one can match billie's pain and despair in her voice. Totally raw.

Tough, tough call. Jazz is probably one of my favorite genre's of music. Both of these talented women had terrible childhoods.

Billie was raped at the age of 12 and then placed in protective custody as a witness for the trial. She later found work in a brothel to make ends meet.

Ella was abused by her stepfather after her mother died at a young age. She ran away from home and was homeless.

I Love both of their voices and have such admiration for these amazing women.

Ella had the better voice, but Billie was the better singer.

Not that there's a real wrong answer.

You have them reversed. You are thinking of Ella with chick Web. Most famous song being a tisket a tasket. She wrote that by the way

I stayed in the "Ella Fitzgerald Suite" at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis once.

What they don't tell you is that suite is in the old "colored annex" and is run down and has a view of the truck entrances.
