Who said journalism isn't dead? Fucking pathetic.

New York Magazine's Gabriel Sherman reports that NBC News executives tried to hire comedian Jon Stewart to host "Meet the Press."

Before choosing Chuck Todd, the show's current moderator, "NBC News President Deborah Turness held negotiations with Jon Stewart about hosting Meet the Press, according to three senior television sources with knowledge of the talks," Sherman reports. "One source explained that NBC was prepared to offer Stewart virtually 'anything' to bring him over. 'They were ready to back the Brinks truck up,' the source said."

An NBC News spokesperson declined to comment for Sherman's piece, and James Dixon, Stewart's agent, did not respond.

Appointing a comedian to one of the most coveted jobs in political journalism may seem implausible, but Turness was desperate for a fix. With the show consistently ranking third behind ABC's and CBS' Sunday offerings, she had considered changing the name and even canceling it, sources previously told POLITICO. That Turness was considering such diverse and radical options right up until the end tells you just how uncertain she was about the appropriate solution.

Stewart might have actually been a boon to "Meet." He has a loyal following, and his comedic monologues often veer into biting political and social critique. It's not inconceivable that he could have ditched the jokes for smart analysis and interrogation, and would be a shorter jump than his colleague Stephen Colbert, who plans to ditch his own stage persona when he moves to CBS' "Late Show."

As Sherman notes, "Stewart can be a devastatingly effective interrogator, and his 'Meet the Press' might have made a worthy successor to Tim Russert’s no-bullshit interviews.

If they got him he'd probably be the most inteligent host currenly on a news program. Certainly smarter than the Fox and ABC line ups combined.

Stewart's interview effectiveness seem to be based, in large part, on his comedic sensibilities.
If works well on the Daily Show, but I can't see it being nearly as effective in a 'traditional' Sunday Talk Shoe format.
Basically, Stewart's influence is in his role of being a talented Court Jester.

Actually, people who get their news from a comedian are prone to vote for big jokes like Obama, but in the end the joke is on them.

You mean those blonde helmetheads on Fox aren't doing comedy?

Democrat war on women...

Are the brunettes just as stupid? What about the Hispanic women on the show?

Are the female black anchors stupid too?

Stewart can dial it down when needed, he's actually quite a good interviewer. I found Stephen Colbert surprisingly good as an interviewer as well.

...and he needs the mantle of court jester to ask some of the questions he does and get away with some of the gratuitous statements he makes.

If he had to actually pretend to have some sort of journalistic integrity he would implode. Not that the various shills on networks right and extreme left have any of that themselves.

And yet, they are still more knowledgeable about current events than FOX news viewers, as has been proven more than once.

Yeah, that's pretty much the point.

On Thursdays, they show pictures of themselves growing up.

;)

So yeah...

Some of those women are incredibly smart and very accomplished.

Guilfoyle and van Sustern had impressive legal careers, for example.
