It's for the hard fabrics. They didn't have too many sewing machines years ago so they made thimbles for hand sewing hard fabrics together without getting their fingers pierced by pushing the needle through.

It's actually so when you have to push a needle threw something hard, you don't end up with the eye end of the needle jammed into your finger, thread and all. I have done it. I occasionally use a needle when I am hand sewing denim through a seam or something. I don't really have any emergency sewing kits. I have everything that is in them, LOTS of it. Probably more than several people could use in a lifetime. It's a long story...
My parents' generation was taught also to use a thimble when hand sewing but I suspect they did it a lot more than machine sewing. I also have a few machines.
