RIP Paul Revere, an American musical patriot and pioneer

I was just listening to some of his songs (yesterday?) becuase it came up in the embarrassing song thread. I didn't know until then about the connection to The Monkees.

The Monkees have more connections than you can probably memorize. They hired all the great songwriters of the period, which gives connections all over the place. One of the writers was Neil Diamond, before he hit it big. "I'm a Believer" and "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You" I believe are two he wrote for the Monkees.

At the time the Monkees were on TV I was in High School. There were all these arguments about them not being a "real band", whatever that means. I never cared, they played real music. I have always felt that the songs had a life of their own, regardless of who wrote or performed them.

I saw Paul Revere on TV, when I was a child. It would have been great, if he and his band promoted Cap'n Crunch.

Among the people who auditioned to be Monkees but were turned down were Stephen Stills, Harry Nilsson and Danny Hutton of Three Dog Night.

Crazy, right!? Can you just imagine Nilsson getting all messed up and punching Masursky in the face a bunch of times.

Story Time!
I was working an assignment in Jacksonville Florida at a major regional bank. There was an oldies bar across the street from the bank, we watched one day as they built an enormous stage in their parking lot for a free concert they were promoting.

I remember they put up an enormous banner that said

Danny Hutton
of
THREE DOG NIGHT

I never realized there was a band member actually named Paul Revere.

And if your middle name was Revere and your last name was Dick, what would you want to be called?

I wouldn't be surprised if he started the band as an act of survival.
