Tom Hanks - Gone?
As much as I am on the internet and keep up with the news on television I don't see how I would have missed the demise of Mr. Hanks soooooooo, I am assuming, from these early posts that this is a more light-hearted type of thread, (so far). But I'd like to post serious about Tom Hanks.
Being older than many posters here I've seen many actors and actresses over the years. There have been so many "great" ones it would be impossible to say who is the best because all of us have different judgement criteria in our minds. But IMHO I rate two actors as being, at least my favorites, because of the variety of roles they have portrayed over the years. I understand many of you will disagree and that is ok. These are just my picks.
In my early movie going years, (by the way, I am only rating the guys, not as a slight to the great female actors but just the guys for now), there weren't many better than James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart or Edward G. Robinson but as newer generations of actors have come along, feel that these two are special.
Tom Hanks and Dustin Hoffman.
Hanks because of huge styles of acting ranging from "Forrest Gump" to "Saving Private Ryan". What a big swing that was, a humble, simple man, (but wise in many ways), in one, to a war veteran in the other. But two movies he made with Meg Ryan stand out because they tugged at your heart. I'm talking about "Sleepless In Seattle" and "You've Got Mail". Maybe simple but also maybe great movies.
Hoffman because, well, how much wider a range can one portray, going from "Tootsie" to roles in "All The Presidents Men", "Papillon", and "Runaway Jury".
So, for the record, Hanks, (and Hoffman), should be considered when speaking of great actors. I'm sure many will disagree and again, that's ok. We all have different likes, (thank goodness).
