What does the Erotic Coupling category entail? Or what exactly does it mean? I can fairly well guess what all the other categories mean but not this one. And a Google search just brings be back to this site without an explanation. Sorry if this is a newb question, I'm pretty new to this.

Its pretty much one on one sexual encounters that fit no other specific kink, like group or gay or incest of interracial.

So if you had a story about a UPS driver that delivered a package and the woman pulled him into the house for some wild sex that's where it would go.

But....there are stories there that feature some other things and they work over there.

Its also not a very highly voted category form what I have seen.

Thanks. I submitted a story a few days ago that didn't fit into any of the categories I was allowed to choose from so I picked Incest/Taboo since though it technically isn't, does border on it. I guess next time I'll choose this category, or avoid writing in it to begin with if it's not very highly voted.

Hey, I had a UPS driver once--I mean in a story. *blush*

But aside from that, amastis, I've heard that Laurel will sometimes move a story from one category to another if she notices it's been wrongly categorized.

The OP would be better off if she did. "Bordering on incest" will get it killed in incest.

But it would be okay in EC

My THE BOOK OF RUTH cycle features group incest, among other things. But the first and (now being written) third chapters of its COMING FAST miniseries are in Erotic Couplings, because the narrator only has one-on-one non-incestuous sex in those chapters. All the RUTH stories have Red H's and the EC chapter has the fewest views and votes but the highest score.

There's an authorial calculus; we must decide whether we want eyeballs or scores. (IMHO scores may be important because Red H's supposedly drive eyeballs, attract readers.) And we must decide whether we want to pander to readers for high scores, or challenge them and get low scores. My BIG BANANA is only borderline incest and its score is down around 2.20. But it's got over 80k views, my most-seen story. My goal is to be read, and that piece IN THAT CATEGORY certainly achieved that. If I'd put it in SciFi where it belongs, it might have achieved a higher score, but would have been lucky to gain 1/10 the views.

So, choose. For lots of eyeballs, write an Incest story. For a fair number of views and LOTS of comments, go Loving Wives. For a good number of views but gentler treatment, go Group or Mature or Novellas. For very few views but decent scores, pander in Erotic Couplings or SciFi or Romance. Something like that.

Well, it went live today on the site and at a current score of 3.71, it's pretty much where I expected it to be for my first story of 'this nature'. So it doesn't look like it's been berated too much, at least yet.

I have seen many stories in that category & started to read them, only to find they involved homosexual relationships, groups, etc...

To answer, the "EC" category could be any of what you describe in your first sentence, or absolutely anything else... It's like a "Cover-All"/"Catch-All".

Mine are all EC except for one BDSM/Domme (twice the views) and a Romance (very few views, but highest score).

Weirdly, part 2 of a 3-parter has thousands more views than part 1, both in EC. What's that about?

Part 2 has a higher score--perhaps it also did when it racked up all those views. It may have appeared on p. 1 of a toplist instead of p. 2. That would make a big difference. A lot of people don't care about following the plot of a series, as long as the action is hot.
