I'd like to try writing a steampunk story sometime. Are there any really good ones here on the site? Or any good steampunk stories or novels out in the real world, erotic or otherwise? I'm going to be doing a lot of reading soon as I recover from surgery, and I'd like to add to my book list.

Suggestions?

1. May your recovery be swift & painless.
2. Listen to this: [here]
3. Remember that steampunk is an alternative past

I look forward to reading it.

At first, best wishes for a speedy recovery :rose: :)

And then load up your gaming rig and play Bioshock Infinite, like I suggested in another thread. Don't be put off by the fact that it's a game - the story is a modern classic and because it's a game you are free to "walk around" and study all the key elements of a typical and beautifully rendered steampunk city.

As far as books goes, the most recent one I read with a SteamPunk theme was Boneshaker by Cherie Priest. It does fit the bill for sure, but somehow I have never been able to fully connect with Cherie's writing style. You might want to take a look though.

Well, first, a speedy recovery.

Second, isn't steampunk a visual thing? It is for me.

Strangelife beat me to it.

As soon as I read your post I thought of the Bioshock series, the third installment is really well done.

And get well soon :)

That's part of it of course, but there is also the whole idea of combining old fashion victorian values and lifestyle with advanced technology.

And because it is such a well-established visual style, you can save yourself a lot of exposition when writing. As soon as you have made your readers understand that your story takes place in a steampunk universe, they are instantly familiar with it.

Steampunk is about a certain mood, tone or mindset as much as it's about gadgets.

I would recommend watching a Showtime series called "Penny Dreadful" to help set the mood of the time period.

Certainly both of the Sherlock Holmes movies with Robert Downey Jr. would be a good choice.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Now with all that visual out the way you asked for books. Here are twenty of the best with a review of them.

Hope something there helps.

It's not erotic, but you can try the Mortal Engines series to get the steampunk vibe flowing.

I mean... moving cities devouring each other? What's not to love?

The webcomic/graphic novel "Girl Genius" is good for a light-hearted comedy take on steampunk. The authors previously wrote erotica (XXXenophile) and although they're keeping GG family-friendly it sometimes feels like the erotica is trying to get in.

They have put out a couple of novelisations; I found them helpful for understanding some of the comic plot, but otherwise I'd recommend sticking with the comic.

Thanks everyone for the intriguing suggestions. Some I'm quite familiar with, some not at all. All in all I will have lots to look into as I'm recovering.

Thank you for the well wishes. I'm having a tonsillectomy tomorrow, so nothing too serious, but the recovery will not be fun so I will need some distractions.

Thanks!

Carriger's "Soulless" was a fun, quick read. Not necessarily erotica, but it's a romance with characters I found interesting and it's definitely a romance.

It was Gail Carriger's PARASOL PROTECTORATE series (SOULLESS, CHANGELESS, BLAMELESS, and HEARTLESS) that indirectly led me to Literotica. The series has airships and many s-p devices, competing and loving werewolves and vampires, and a wee little bit of erotica. The search for more brought me here to LIT.

Some soulless scoundrels might go looking for torrents of s-p novels and comix. Aargh.

I'd suggest going back to the beginning: Jules Verne. At the least, you get the perspective of Victorian life from a story written during the era, and a take on what Verne dreamed advanced technology would be.

The graphic novel of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is much better than the film, though the movie had some nicely stylized steampunk visuals.

Other Books:

The Difference Engine
Golden Compass
The Anubis Gates
Queen Victoria's Bomb

You can pretty much find all of those on Amazon.

Good ideas! I like steampunk stories, but when the author overdoes the sex like writing the heroine as a virgin, then has her acting like a whore with her first sexual experience, it throws me out of the suspension of belief.

I'm pleased to see all the love Bioshock is getting. Marvelous little franchise.

LOEG is fantastic as well (the comic, not the God awful movie.)

Jonah Hex qualifies too, Final Fantasy (the game), Van Helsing (if you are feeling masochistic), the anime Trigun (if you are feeling far out), Fullmetal Alchemist (very cool if you like animation).

Books: The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters, Tarnished

Get well soon! I had mine out last year, it's not the most fun experience, but it did eventually heal up.

If you're interested in steampunk games, I'd suggest Arcanum.

Yeah, Arcanum does the steampunk aesthetic well (crossed with magic) although I have to say, the game left a bad taste in my mouth. Spoiler upcoming:

One of the side-quests involves the player discovering an organisation that's systematically kidnapping women to be raped and killed as part of a forced breeding program that produces half-ogre servants. The game provides no option for doing anything to stop this - you can collect evidence but if you try to do anything with it, it gets disappeared and from there there's no option to keep trying.

:eek: I haven't run across that scenario. Mostly, I just wander around lost, clicking on random flowers and things. {I do not have a virtual map in my head.}

sheablue, you might want to check out Emma Holly's Demon World series.
