They work in the service industries and skrimp and save and their kids, one generation later are who you see making California colleges have the "wrong balance" of ethnicity. These people are no different than the ones working the fields in any Asian country.

I have a friend who was one of those chinese adoptions of "orphans" because of china's one child rule where parents would abandon girls. Likely she came from peasant stock. She is as bright as the come. Ended up adopted by a couple of college professors.

Parental encouragement make all the difference.

We have way more a problem with the opposite of Tiger moms in the US, in my opinion, than we do with too strict Tiger moms. By far. But of course you're right. Anything can be taken too far. When I meant 'best and brightest', I should have been more specific. Of course those that came here to "skimp" have a set mentality that allowed them to escape the conditions of their native country.

They bring that mentality on to their children. It isn't so much to do with culture and race, but rather the survival mentality....work or starve. They don't want their children experiencing the conditions that they struggled with in their native environment.
