Years ago KRC was posted something about her minivan. I tossed in a comment like "your right front tire is low and needs air."

She FREAKS OUT. "HOW DID YOU KNOW MY RIGHT FRONT TIRE WAS LOW???!!!?!??!!!"

:) All minivans have low right front tires.

That's true. I'm always putting air in that sucker.

Wait a minute. HOW DID YOU KNOW????????

*pulling down my blinds NOW*

IMHO the greatest trolls - like legendary con artists and salespeople - are the ones who you never know are trolling.

Many of the people on the list are pretty obvious. They make fun of fat women, they pick on "retards", they use the n-word, they do all the things you do if you want to make people all outraged and stuff. And they're effective because people love nothing more than to be outraged. But most people can see these guys coming a mile away.

But the true trolls - the real masters of deceit who manage to totally fuck up everybody - are the ones who we never knew were trolling - the users who had us fooled.

For that reason, I have to choose KRC. She totally fooled me. I was floored when she was outed. Bravo. :rose:

KRC fooled me too. In retrospect, she "slipped" twice, which normally would have tripped my Spidey Sense, but I was so fooled I shrugged it off.

I was, however, never fooled by plucky rape survivor "Karen Kraft". Someone linked to one of "her" threads yesterday, and the amount of "fat shaming" that "Karen" once heaped on women was absolutely astounding.

And "Karen" turned out to be a 350-pound man...

Krc fooled us on gender, but other than that was a traditional troll in an obvious way, following people around to heap on abuse.

He was big on slut/whore shaming, but would otherwise couch most of his trolling as justifiable, (labelling and targetting racists, pedophiles, the painfully stupid...). That made him come across as opinionated and antiseptic a lot of the time and not just a pest, like most trolls.
I was utterly taken in by the deception.

Gender Genie pegged her as male.

Gender Genie was never wrong.

Gender genie pegged ****** as female,
And around that time ******** suddenly vanished...
Coincidence? I think not.

Gender genie is a useful tool for spotting catfish.

You left Eeyore off the list. Very prolific with his trolling, though he doesn't really try to trick people. At least I hope, for his sake, that's not what he's doing. Otherwise he looks like an even bigger idiot.
Amicus also quite trollish, although he actually believes what he posts.
I think they are one in the same.

I agree with you a milliontypercent. While open trolling can be [choose your adjective], it's creepy as hell to discover (be it publicly or privately) a fire ant nest of crazy-ass crap perpetuated by people behind the scenes or off the boards. Sometimes you have no idea how big that damn nest is until you creep step-by-disturbing-step down that road. Then you start getting that skin-prickly feeling that there's a giant, drooling drama troll around the corner.

And maybe she let him keep his nads.

Big maybe.

Exactly. It's that "all you know is wrong feeling", like when you find out there's no tooth fairy and those two dogs in the middle of the road weren't just hugging each other from behind.

I don't think of a character as a "troll"... I think of a thread as a troll in the classic definition of "trolling for newbies".

Under that definition, anyone can run a troll....

Ish does it all the time....DCL does it....lots of posters run little trolls for fun.

"Is chat down?"

I don't count Gender Benders like Karen Kraft or KRC as "trolls"...they're just boys pretending to be girls.

Some of those threads are endlessly funny. The snarky, cynical bitch inside of me just can't stop laughing. Especially when Dolf, Pointless, and Garnate get hold of them. I also have the adjoining feeling that many of those threads are started for the sake of kicking up the shit.

There's a certain tone that comes across when people are honestly being hateful. It's way different from snark.

What cocksmoking asshat made this thread

Scotty
Stealing this.

In Internet slang, a troll is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people,[1] by posting inflammatory,[2] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[3] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[4]
This sense of the word troll and its associated verb trolling are associated with Internet discourse, but have been used more widely. Media attention in recent years has equated trolling with online harassment. For example, mass media has used troll to describe "a person who defaces Internet tribute sites with the aim of causing grief to families."[5][6]

The media cottoned onto the term Troll and misunderstood its meaning long after it had been doing the rounds, then again people started to use it to win an argument on a forum or in comments when things were not going their way. So easy to say, shut up troll rather than come up with a decent counter argument.

Original trolls were pretty much as Lauren describes, they would go into a chat room, forum, even MMORPGS and undertake an opposite stance on whatever was the majority position in that community, they would then cleverly provocative, incite arguments or situations and then after lighting the blue touch paper, watch the sparks fly.

A good troll would be able to do this, only make one or two posts/comments and they would sit back and watch the results. The community sometimes only realising they had been had once the troll had disappeared, if they ever caught on at all.

The media now has anyone posting bullying, racist, nagative, hurtful remarks marked as a troll. They are not trolls and they actually besmear the good names of the original trolls who if anything were only really cunning mischief makers. (kinda like modern fairy tales :D)

So if any of the nominated managed to do this then they should be voted for.

I would also be interested to find out if the gender-genies had used their faux gender to stoke and fuel arguments among the lit forum members. With others being non the wiser. That would be top trolling. Unless they were just gender bending to be sad and get cock pictures posted to them, then they are pretty much fail.

EDIT: Took a while to post this and since then MBates has posted a dictionary definition, which basically has come about through the media and misunderstanding of the Originals.

Hit the nail on the head.
