Hey there --

Not sure if this is the place to ask this but here goes. Is Fan Fic ok here? Is it a big no-no? I haven't seen any really but doesn't mean it's not done.

Thanks in advance!

If you're referring to something like a sexy Buffy the Vampire story or Gilmore Girls, & etc, I've seen those types of stories posted under the Celebrities category.

To answer your question, yes Fan Fic is allowed at Lit. There's a lot in the Celebrity category.

Now for my question: Do you have a story idea?

Yes it's done here, but prepare for a bunch of people to tell you that you are infringing on copyrights and are asking for a world of hurt.

They're wrong, of course, since you are not making any money off your contribution, but they will tell you that anyway.

Hi there,

Fan fiction is on here I should know as I have just posted a batman story.

If you check in the celebrity stories you will find plenty to fill your boots with.

Also, most of the fan fiction here is far more erotic and at times no holds barred than you would find at fanfiction.net where only the tame survives.

NO, this is not true. Do not think for a second that non-commercial use is automatically not infringement.

I'm sorry, I hate to sound like one of those people you're complaining about, but this is a very dangerous myth that gets flogged around a lot. It's true that the lack of commercial activity helps your Fair Use claim, but it is NOT a guarantee. You can still be found to be infringing, depending on the specific use. I cannot stress enough how important is it that we all stop saying otherwise.

While they do allow fan fic here at Lit, it must be posted under the Celebrity category.

As for Copyrights -

Criminal copyright infringement, including infringement without monetary gain, is investigated by the FBI and is punishable by up to 5 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

US Copyright law...but, it is highly unlikely that they will come after you...unless of course you are a millionaire or billionaire or have lots of money they can take away from you.

I don't really understand why one would post fanfic here instead of at AO3 or adultfanfic where people who like to read erotic fanfic are looking for it.

It ain't that simple. Try telling the MPAA "yeah, I uploaded that movie but I didn't make any money off it" and see how far that gets you.

Not-for-profit uses get a bit more leeway than commercial in determining whether the work is fair use, but it's not a free pass. I'm not sure that Literotica would even be recognised as "non-profit", given that it makes money from showing banner ads to people who come here to read the stories.

The legal status of fanfic is unclear, and probably depends on the nature of the individual work. Discussion of the issues here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_issues_with_fan_fiction

Because you'll reach more readers the more sites you feature your story on. Even if one site attracts fewer readers for that particular fare, if even a handful of people (or even just one?) who would otherwise never lay eyes on your story sees it here instead then it's worth the 40 seconds it takes to submit the tale.
