The Official Author's Hangout 2014 Summer Lovin' Contest Support Thread

I think I only had 25 votes on my audio story for nude day at the end of the contest. Maybe I sounded too much like the girl at he drive thru. Would you like fries with that?

That's why I had someone better than me do mine. (Kingswoman). Her voice is so much sexier. Mine is more like a squeaky door.

I saw that a couple of stories skirted the "stand alone story" rule. One linked to the previous episode in the text. The other gave a disclaimer that it could stand alone, but would really better if you read the other story first. I'm not in love with that.

I've been persuaded to continue mine but I will wait till the contest is over. I'm also working at continuing a Earthday story from a couple of years ago.

I'm not talking about sequels.

There are two that encourage the reader to read a previous episode. They're just not numbered chapter 1, chapter 2.

I sent a message to Laurel asking if it's fair game. I don't even think I'm eligible to win, so I'm not trying to be nasty. I'm just a fan of rules and people who follow them.

That is where you & Laurel each have your rightful differing opinions.

I've had a comment and a email feedback asking for a continuation. I hadn't planned it, but it might be possible, maybe not a continuation, but more like a spin-off. Not until the contest is over, heck with me it might be years. I've been fiddling with a continuation of my 2012 Halloween contest story ever since it was posted and still haven't got much more than a rough outline half done.

I got an explanation from Laurel. Here it is:

As explanation: when we started holding special contests, we got into the habit of posting those entries at the top of the daily New list with the rationale that they had less time to accrue votes for those contests than the regular stories do for the monthly contests. Unfortunately, there were too many authors who enjoyed occupying the top spots and thus started breaking normal-length stories into 750-word "chapters" and submitting them every day as contest entries. You can see this if you look back a few years at the special contest lists. This is the reason we made this rule.

So long as the piece actually works as a standalone story - as long as they're not taking one full Summer story and breaking it into pieces to be submitted separately for a specific contest, there should be no problem. Authors have submitted stories which are continuations of or share the same worlds as stories previously submitted to other special contests previously.

To give some specific examples of what Laurel is saying to look up, from an old post of mine:

If we dig back several contests prior to the rule, we see this.

Winter 2007: 7 chapters of multi-part stories out of 81 entries
Valentines 2008: 4 chapters of multi-part stories out of 84 entries

Forward in time a little:

Earth Day 2008: 20 chapters of multi-part stories out of 56 entries

Skipping How-To, as the theme wasn't exactly chapter-friendly anyway

Nude Day 2008: 22 chapters of multi-part stories out of 71 entries
Halloween 2008: 49 chapters of multi-part stories out of 165 entries

Winter 2008 introduced the No-Chapter rule.

It's a good rule. :)

The kicker for me is that they be complete standalone stories. A chapter isn't a full story yet. If they are separate stories but related to others by characters and events, that would be fine with me (and I've entered stories like this in contests here myself).

Ditto. I've only entered a couple contests so far (but I only started writing a year ago) and I'll enter more. One entry (ONE BLADE OF GRASS) shared a universe, characters and modified timeline with my RON series but story-wise was totally unconnected. A piece I'm working on for the future will be part of my existing A TASTE OF INCEST cycle, but is not linked to anything else in that cycle, which are mainly standalone episodes. (That Hallowe'en entry, A TASTE OF PUMPKIN, will itself consist of three totally distinct vignettes.) No, a chapter that is incomplete without prequels or sequels is NOT a story.

I'm back in the game. I just submitted my contest story today. I trying something new: third person, male POV.

Just submitted mine

Right to the end I was wavering on group and mature and....

Ended up playing safe with group. The age gap is not played up as much as it could have been and there is a lot of lesbian action with the two bi-women so I think it hits more hot spots in group.

Here’s another brilliant post from the A.I.R. contest thread – Ahlands #1 thread with over 90,000 views - made by the texas ALT known as the BowlfulBard. Something I’m sure this ALT would love to have us share with you on the oggy/tigergirl thread.

How many more of these pathetic ALTS is the dumb one going to pull out of his hat?

I'm doing some serious shuffling of mine. The first scene felt abrupt, and I wasn't happy with the transition. The second felt like it was taking too long to set up.

Solution: Move a lot of that interaction to the first scene, and eliminate a peripheral character completely, giving some good lines she had to the female MC. It gives me a much better transition, fleshes out the first scene, and leaves me in a place to jump right into the action in the second.

Now if the young one and work will just let me finish the dadgum thing :p

I'm about finished with a third story. I might drop it in the lineup over the weekend or wait until Moanday. It's a fishing story with several twists. :D

Well I see we had another visit to Ahlands #1 thread with over 90,000 views - made by the texas ALT known as the BowlfulBard. Not only that - its ALTmaster also posted. I’m sure this cretin would love to have us share it with you on the oggy/tigergirl thread.

This dynamic duo of the dumb one and his ALT have now made poss # 2276, 79, 81, 83 and 84 on the #1 thread. How many more of these pathetic ALTS is the dumb one going to pull out of his hat?

I had hoped to finish a second story for the contest, but it just isn't working out the way I wanted it to. So I'm going to leave it for a while and come back to it later.

Well, after my very kind alpha reader verified my worst fears about my original entry, I've spent a couple days writing a new one. The scariest part of this new one? I did the editing myself. I think the story works, but now it's in the hands of machine. (Fingers crossed). Good luck everyone!

I had not intended to do a Summer story, but I have this significant fragment that never made it to an earlier contest. It's set on Memorial Day weekend in the California desert, which I think is summery enough. Stay tuned for Prickly Pairs. (I'll make something of my current vacation after all -- sitting on a foggy coast, writing about cactus cocktails, yeah. Weather here has been too overcast for pleasant walks on the beach.)

it gets kinda tense when one puts it 'out there', eh? it's like, "oh, shit, i shoulda done this or I coulda done that." but it's too late!

good luck, BD - and everyone else, 'course. :)

i've got one done that i'm going over. but time, as usual, is speeding along. so it will be what it will be.

Mine went up yesterday morning. Vote total was pretty low considering the category and it being in a contest, but it got over a hundred over night.

Scores not fantastic, but about where I had figured it would be considering its a long stroke story and nowhere near as "involved" as a lot of my stories.

I am more interested in what I get for feedback on this one as it features a pair of over sexed porn character like cougars I have thought about doing a few stories around so I'll see how they go over.
