I suspect that, in the long term, Putin will get much more than he currently has right now (meaning Russia will), and that's a bad thing, to be sure. But the USSR is never coming back. In the end, the U.S. will need Putin's Russia to cooperate with our solving the Islamic issue. It may come to very ugly actions being taken by the U.S. and we actually can count on Russia to back those unfortunate actions a lot more than we can count on lisping Europe. Putin, like Stalin, understands the dynamics of nasty brutality taking place at a nearly unimaginable scale. Without Putin’s permission, the Islamic solution will never come. With Russia's help, 90 percent of the problem will be solved and all that will remain is the whining and pictures of dead "freedom fighters."
ISIS/ISIL whatever must not be contained. It must not be controlled. It must not be defeated. It must be eliminated. Each and every man, woman, child, kitten and puppy in the entourage must be killed. No wasting Navy Seals teams' time to go nab the cockroach rap singing Nazi jerk, dragging him off to NYC to stand trial, write a book, eventually get a talk show. Nope. Extermination of all of them, everywhere. Shoot on sight. If you make a mistake, just say, “Sorry ‘bout that!” and move on to the next. MOAB and Napalm B, not Hellfire. B52s not F18s Constant carpet bombing their roach trail all the way from Mosul to Aleppo and beyond.
People rag on Obama for not respecting his own red line about Assad’s chemical weapons in Syria. I strongly suspect Putin schooled the president on a few things. The current regime in Syria isn't our cup of tea, to be sure. But now seeing the alternative running what used to be parts of Syria and Iraq. Hey! Putin was correct. Let Assad do what needs to be done to help eliminate ISIS (with Russia's approval and help) inside Syria and we can turn the rest of the roach trail into glass.
Then we can all light candles and say how sorry we are. We will warm our hands and hearts by the fires of worldwide condemnation and flag burnings. And we will all sleep very well at night, thank you.
