Texas Gov. Rick Perry Indicted on Charge of Abuse of Power
Gov. Rick Perry of Texas was indicted on two felony counts on Friday by a state grand jury examining his handling of a local district attorney’s drunken driving arrest and the state financing for a public corruption unit under the lawyer’s control.
The indictment was returned late Friday in Austin.
The investigation centered on Mr. Perry’s veto power as governor. His critics asserted that he used that power as leverage to try to get an elected official and influential Democrat and elected official — Rosemary Lehmberg, the district attorney in Travis County — to step down after her arrest for drunken driving last year. Ms. Lehmberg is Austin’s top prosecutor and oversees a powerful public corruption unit that investigates state, local and federal officials; its work led to the 2005 indictment of a former Republican congressman, Tom DeLay on charges of violating campaign finance laws.

Next up: Chris Christie.

Being indicted is the first step toward, but still a long way from, being convicted. Having said that, the guy does often make dirt seem more intelligent.

And yes, it will be hard indeed to run for office while under indictment. Not to say he wouldn't still try. Note the last sentence from my comment above.

it's about fucking time. money for cancer research into the pockets of friends and vetoing of funding for the (drunk) watchdogs who called him out. criminal.

This ad pretty much killed any chance he had for the Presidency.

I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m a Christian, but you don’t need to be in the pew every Sunday to know there’s something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can’t openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school.

As president, I’ll end Obama’s war on religion. And I’ll fight against liberal attacks on our religious heritage. Faith made America strong. It can make her strong again.

His aspirations? Doubtful. His mind is a place of wonder I think.

But I never thought he had a chance in the world, regardless.

There were do many front runners the last two election cycles. And so many dumb shits. It was entertaining to say the least.

I wonder which GOPer stands to benefit most with Perry out of running for his party's nomination.

Rand?

I think the Dems would be fucking delighted if either Perry or Rand Paul got the GOP nomination.

2016 should be an interesting election. I'm convinced in hindsight that 2012 was a thrown game by the Republicans.

I see it as two different issues.

Can/will he run?

Most likely he will if for no other reason than to force the debate on certain issues and in certain directions.

Can/will he get the nomination?

Nope. He'll have about as much of a chance as he did in '12 and probably even less now.

That being said it is painfully obvious that the DA's in Travis County can get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich. Travis County/Austin is the San Francisco of Texas.

Your talking about Texas, good ole boys and politics. A pat on the back, a wink and a nod . The indictments are toilet paper watch how it all just goes away...

when the state's attorney general looks the other way, as his contributors receive more than 42 million dollars from the agency originally in question, who else is going to call out the governor?

Well, that's how politics works. We might as fruitfully discuss Obama's giveaways to those failed solar companies. You can't pick and choose your outrage. (Well, you can but you'll look silly doing so.)

and that's how political threads on the GB work. bring up obama, and pretend your man did nothing wrong.

Wrong? Only in the eyes of a vengeful DA and a pet grand jury. If you recall Tom DeLay was indicted by the same county. And convicted in another equally liberal county. And then the conviction was overturned on appeals. Of course his political career was destroyed in the process, but that was the whole point of the exercise.

the wrong is for the courts to decide. as with delay, if there are any convictions, all it will take is going to an appeals court where republicans out weigh democrats, for it to be overturned - the taxpayer and average joe being fed the lines of the day.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's no longer about justice, just whose side wins.

And by the way, Perry isn't necessarily the prime target in this battle.

it's the joel olsteen version of cancer research, where the point of investment is not salvation, but profit. but, hey, as long as we feel good doing it, there's nothing criminal about it! all this research, and we still don't have medical marijuana. something is beyond wrong. and that's my indian head penny for the evening.

Of course, they have to do something to change the polls for Wendy "Vote my ovaries" Davis.
