Well I would guess that it could be pretty different for everyone, and spanking yourself as MeekMe suggests is a great idea for exploring physical sensations. However, there is usually a mental state that goes along with a spanking as well that can change our enhance the physical sensation. Some are feared. Those seem to hurt more.
