Another point on the legal redress against Internet harassment. Most of the inroads into being able to pursue this are in the child endangerment area. That doesn't apply on this Web site from the getgo. Literotica has a "no users under 18" rule announced up front. Any complaints by a minor on abuse in Literotica would not be legally entertained. The minor had no business being here and those who are here and are engaging in harassment have the legal right to assume they are harassing an adult. Just the way it is--legally.

Truth be known, Literotica couldn't even be used in child abuse police entrapment activities. They couldn't lure a preditor into compromising activity through PMs here. The legal presumption is that the preditor would be hooking up with an adult no matter what the content of the PMs claimed. The entraptors can't claim to be underage and adult at the same time in the context of their sting.

There's a lot of bluster on Lit. about what is a user's legal right (usually playing out in copyright). In most cases it's just that--bluster and bluff. Sometimes that works, which is fine, if it gets the job done against an abuser/violator. But you shouldn't kid yourself that it's just that--bluff. Either that or overassuming what your legal protections are or what your own legal obligations are if you wish to be able to invoke a legal option. (To have a legal option on libel on the Web site, you'd have to use your real name and the harassment must credibly--to the court--target your real-name reputation; for legal recourse in the United State on copyright, you need to have registered your copyright.) There's no court anywhere that's going to exert energy to protect activity in either the Internet or the erotica arena. Indeed, the laws are set up to protect the courts from having to entertain this sort of stuff.

You may be right. I may have let them play me. I am relatively new here and I am not used to the level of disgusting comments I received, and I'm definitely not used to receiving death threats toward me and my family. And to be clear, I'm not talking about ANON comments. I turned off anonymous comments.

And it is an assumption with zero merit to suggest that I ignored those who contacted me with favorable comments only to engage the trolls. I respond to every PM and email I receive.

Granted, I am new to this venue, but if standing in place and allowing children to drive by and hurl insults and threats and say disgusting things about you and your family - at will - is considered winning, that is a concept I have yet to understand.

I'm sorry. In my attempt to be concise I have misled you.

I did not respond to any attacks initially. However, after submitting three chapters and continually receiving the same obscene attacks from the same dickheads, I began to swing back. Guess what? The ones I addressed began to shut the fuck up. The problem is, I am WAY outnumbered and I can't do it all on my own.

I've said my piece and I don't want to belabor the subject. I did not mean to hurt anyone's feelings. I just wish there was a way to deal with the minority of dickheads.

If I read a story that seems thoughtful and well written, but does not interest me or turn me on due to pacing or subject material, I generally will not finish it or rate it. I think it is unfair too judge a genre that I am not a fan of, especially if I did not finish it. The only time I will rate something I didn't finish is if I stopped because it was a grammatically hard to read nightmare and just jumped all over the place with little or no continuity.

I think a lot of poor ratings on well written stories probably come from people that are looking to get a predetermined fix in a particular style, length, or sexual situation and do not find it or are offended by something within the story. It should be remembered that many of the greatest artists of all time were generally viewed as extreme and offensive until long after their death.

Accurate descriptions, tags, and story categories can help to mitigate this factor, but you can't help it if your content targets a narrow audience (intentionally or otherwise) and the masses click on your story for the hell of it just to be disappointed.

In the end, it is best to write because it makes you happy, and if you are driven by feedback, rejoice even if only one single person let you know they enjoyed reading it because you made all of their worldly problems fade away, even if only for a short while.

P.S. I myself just submitted my first story, still pending at this time, but I am not expecting very high marks because it might be overly intense, shocking, and explicit for some, but it was a blast to write so it was its own reward.

Good point. I follow Levay and for some reason it never struck me to think of trolls as psychic Vampires.

Then again for me they are not. I have no issues with trolls or comments. I laugh at the over the top remarks and never delete anything. My comments here are based on what could be done for the many they do bother.

I repeat that anon can be made to vanish by lit asking for a handle. Even though with our "names" here we are still anon it seems the majority of nastiness comes from anon not people with ID's. Cut anon from this site trolling will drop.

You lose some readers, but most will be ones not missed.

Oddly, if you look at the last 6 months, you have spent far more time making false and defamatory accusations against the site than your friend scouries. In fact, many of your accusations against us (fixing contests, etc) mirror his exactly.

For years, I spent time and effort answering your accusations because I thought you were a volatile but well-meaning supporter of the site. I've been nothing but polite and helpful to you, both on the forum and in private conversation. Anyway, the energy vamp term I use is derived from the usage in electronic devices- those little devices that quietly eat away your power even when you're not using the device e.g. the digital clock on your microwave.

There are different kinds of trolls and different ways to deal with them. You prefer the head-on course of action which does not suit everyone as many people don't enjoy conflict.

Like i mentioned earlier, asking readers to register will in no way decrease the nastiness simply because you added that one additional step.

If it was my site, I wouldn't bother inconveniencing its users with a step when there is no evidence to suggest that I will get the desired result of zero/ significantly minimized nastiness.

Only way to know-as far as dropping anon-would be to try it and see if there is a decrease. My opinion is it would, but only one way to find out.

I don't think my method is head on. Head on would be commenting back and arguing with them. I just let the comments stand and never delete or reply. I would say my approach is apathy, I show them I don;t care and it takes their steam away.

I have seen a lot of comments where the troll says "so you removed my comment like I knew you would."

In my opinion that's the proof you're better off letting it stand. The author who removed this idiot's comment allowed him an opening to tell everyone "he removes comments"

Bottom line is its all stupid and unnecessary, but people are mostly stupid and many are unnecessary so there you go.

One thing that annoys me is authors who delete anything but glowing praise. Even "Not as good as the last chapter, but still liked it" will be removed.

To me that's a sign of arrogance, not just being thin skinned.

I believe the only decrease you would see...

would be from other writers. How many that is, I have no idea. Whether someone is signed in or not, they are still anonymous. There are several trolls that constantly write vile and are proud to sign their anonymous Literotica ID to it.

Where it becomes a problem is when that person also writes stories and wants to be anonymous for fear of reprisal. I know a few of them because they use the same verbiage and phraseology in this forum as they do in their vitriol.

Not in my case, not really. I don't get hassled by Anonymous too much, not in comparison to being hassled by accounts with IDs. I would expect the GM stories, for instance, to be hit by a nasty Anonymous much (much) more than they are. I don't get much in the way of nasty Anonymous attacks even on the LW stories I post (although they are different from the norm of LW stories posted here). A good many of the Anonymous slams I do get on stories seem obviously tied to posters to this forum, which is wholly IDed posters.

That said, I'd like to see a "no Anonymous voting" option available to the authors. I'd use it.
