Yellow Dog origins-

Blue Dog Democrats!

All of these "blue Dog" Democrats were so quick to sell out to the banks, it is disturbing. This amendment would have sailed through, and provided desperately needed protections for students, were it not for the Blue Dogs voting with the Republicans. Meanwhile, their constituents are being preyed upon by banks out to make credit card-like profits from student loans, with none of the risk. This is destroying people's lives.

Way to go, Blue Dogs!

Blue dogs were not a riff on red-state, blue state. As far as I knew those terms weren't around then.

Conservative "Blue Dog Democrats" were so named because their constituents were apt to favor Bluetick Coonhounds for their huntin' dogs.

Here is the story of the yellow dogs.

A man was bragging about how vicious and tough his dog was. The other men were not easily impressed, so he offered a demonstration. A young boy was coming down the street. He was dragging reluctant short legged yellow dog on a leash.

The man says, "Watch this," and tells the dog, "Sic'em." His dog makes a ferocious bark and charges the yellow dog. The yellow dog waits for the big dog to get close and bites it clean in half.

The man is devastated. "Boy, what kind of dog is that?" he screams.

The boy answers. "Well, before we cut his tail off and painted him yellow, he was a alligator."

The name was taken by Texas legislators who were progressive on local issues such as farm subsidies and public assistance, but conservative on national issues such as defense.

The blue dogs are another story.

Red and blue states are actually brand fucking new in the grand scheme of things. It was either 2000 or 2004 when the term shows up, prior to that Red was defending champ and Blue was challenger (or vice versa, it's trivia)
