FAWC 5: Line, Please!

I find it interesting how some stories dive and bounce, and others stay pretty much static.

I think it's just comparative volatility. Most of us are used to having stories with 100+ votes, not ten, so individual up and down votes don't count for as much in the aggregate score. Few of the stories have even as many votes as their are authors competing. If two people had to wait until the weekend to read and vote, that's enough to significantly change a score with so few votes.

Speak for yourself Freya, with your masterful Pool story! My stories never get close to 100 votes! Granted I don't have that many stories posted, but neither do you. ;)

A lot of it is category and, a lot of it, following. Look at LC or TX. They get more votes in the first day than I do in a year. Still, I always manage 100, at least on the first chapter. I'm shocked you don't.

Edit: you also write a lot of wonderful, ambitious, esoteric stuff. That brings in fewer votes that blood and jizz.

Pfft. Belay that "masterful" talk. The second chapter of my stroker had almost 300 votes, and I'm a nobody compared to everyone else FAWCking around this month.

I don't always get that many.

But some plummet. It isn't all positive movement. In fact, the sweep helped most stories.

And Laurel decides what stays and what goes. She is the algorithm. I have stories that have loitered at 4.40 for a year, and never budge.

Of course all of these are in the same category and supposedly without the author revealed. Which was the point of doing it this way.

100 votes? <chuckle>

I don't see numbers like that. I'm not very prolific at all. I'm fine with that. This contest and the main themed contests may be the most exposure I get.

I also don't forget that I initially came here as a reader. Even FAWC was something I enjoyed reading more, and I still do. I'm reading along now, kind of bounced back and forth between the different story types and categories. By reading these contests, I'm kinda stretching myself, reading content I usually wouldn't seek out. So as fucking stupid and corny as it sounds, it is kinda enlightening.

I've spent way too much time trying to figure this out. Every time I think I have it, I realize there are 5 more stories. I'm resorting to guessing in some cases. Oh well.

BlindJustice- The True Oracle
Sabb- Cooking It Up
sr71plt- Knife, Book, Hankie
Slyc- Midnight Ball
PL- Escape
Lynn- Account for Bullet, Escape
jomar- Danielle's Birthday
Jagfarlane- Mesmerized
stlgoddessfreya- Mystery Night
MST- Inspiration and Desperation, Heirloom
drteetho- Craving for Brandy
Sheablue- Sex Manual
Tamlin01- Reunion
Seanathon- Invasion of the Orcs
Aynmair- Games She Plays
SecondCircle- Roses and Thorns
AMoveable Beast- A Mile, Empires of the Stars
Saxon-Transitions
Swilly- Kay and Bob, Arranged Marriages
TxTallTales- Desperate Measures
Ellie- Lorelei's Call
pl- ???

Too many authors. Too many stories. Sigh.

I saw one that started off with a 1 vote (I don't think a 1 vote can be anything but a grudge vote in an exercise like this where it's not just authors straight off the trolley car) and the next vote after the sweep swept the 1 vote away was -- a 1 vote. Can't say Litsers aren't persistent.

That sucks if so.

Are y'all looking at the FAWKer story page or the account page listing reads and votes?

I've been away for the weekend (I actually still am) but only have a few more to read. Maybe 4?

I have some solid guesses on some, but there were so many new authors this time around (which is awesome) that I won't be able to guess all of them. Mostly those who have FAWCked before, or whose work I've read for other reasons.

A few people have guessed Sex Manual for me, and I understand why. But that's not it. :D

I also feel that the comments and feed back have been really great this time around, where not only are there more comments per story, I see a lot of people really trying to be constructive. Love it!

It was so much easier in FAWC 3. My brain's about to short circuit. It stopped being fun about two hours ago.

The New York Times Crossword is calling.

If you're not having fun, pl, give or a rest! Don't let your rep stress you out. ;)

Thrilled with the details of these comments. I'm so proud of all if you poor, depraved smut-peddlers. I could kiss you all. And I know the rules, not on the mouth.
