Not a literary joke! It's a real white whale (evidently there are two of them, both male, both humpbacks and totally white. The first was spotted back in 1991, the second in 2011. I believe the one in the video is the elder). He's awesome, popular and protected! Yay! See for yourself here.

I don't know if Herman Melville ever saw a real white whale or only heard tell of one, but if he had, well...I kinda think he'd have made the creature the hero of the book :D Because that white whale is friggin' awesome! I'd write a book about him in a heartbeat

Migaloo, is his name on his journey north,

- Migaloo's name means "White Fella" in the Australian Aboriginal language

Well, one of them. There are over 100 Australian Aboriginal languages still in use - "in the Aboriginal language" is about as vague as "in the European language" :)

1991 and 2011? Slow night in the 3113 household?
It was a warm, beautiful, leisurely night, as a matter of fact. The kind of night that makes one pause and smell the star-blooming jasmine. Hence, this recent video (put out just yesterday), which gives a nice fresh view of said whale, a rare sight no matter how many times it may have been photographed before. I think we authors can always benefit from new views of such things, especially when they come with literary credentials.

Ah, you had white whales messing around in your jasmine. It's all clear to me now.

That's a metaphor, of course.

Tangential:

She: I brought home two potatoes, a chicken, and a potphor.
He: Potphor? What's a potphor?
She: To cook the chicken and potatoes, dummy.

Cool 3, I like the Melville linkage. But to be real honest, it should have been a sperm, sperm whale that is.:)

The whale was the hero of the book. It finally got rid of that boob in the boat, Ahab.
