How many total votes are required before a story becomes eligible for inclusion on the various thirty days/twelve months/all time Top Lists? And are there additional requirements beyond the minimum number of votes?

There are two Top Lists. Most Read, and Categories.

For the Most Read list, you literally don't need any votes. It's measured by how many times the story was opened.

For the Categories top lists, I'd imagine you'd need at least 1. I've seen stories listed there with only a few votes.

There are no requirements.

As near as I can tell, 10 votes for 30 days and 12 months, 100 for All Time.

I thought it used to be fifty votes for the "last thirty days" list and a hundred votes for the "all-time" list, and I notice there are a couple of stories on the "all-time" list with just over a hundred votes, so it seems like the total-votes requirements haven't changed. That's why I'm wondering whether there are any additional requirements, since one of my stories has well over one hundred votes and it's still not listed despite having a top-five score.

Perhaps the rules have changed?

I don't think any rules have changed. I noticed discrepancies like that years ago--and just stopped looking at those lists.

Those lists are important for one obvious reason: they give a story 'legs.' The only stories that really gain any traction with large numbers of readers are those that remain on the first pages of the various lists, where people can see them.

We have little idea what sends an individual reader to a story and why. We can up the possibilities, but we can't make blanket statements for reader behavior. My most-read story, I'm sure, is most read simply because the title starts with a Z.

If you're referring to your series and the incest top list?

Don't bother, the 12 month and all time list have been broken for getting close to two years now. Its been mentioned repeatedly and on more than one thread laurel herself said they were going to check into it....(want some great land in Florida at a good price:rolleyes:)

So if you're asking because you think you should be there and you're not the reason is it has not changed in a year and a half neither has the 12 month list only the 30 day works for that category.

As for do the top lists help a story "stay alive"? I think they do because people see "top list" they want to check it out.

Think about it, the average story has the majority of its attention the first couple of days, then some more for maybe a week then it starts to fade into obscurity with only occasional votes and comments.

I have a story at about 2 and half years old that still gains comments and votes on a regular basis and the fact it has bounced between #1-#3 on the all time mature list is the only reason I can see why it would.

Then again....I have a year old incest story that if the list worked I am sure would be somewhere in the top 20 or so and although it only shows on my page it gets favs and votes weekly as well so they are finding it somewhere.

I think the top lists are a form of "payment" for the authors. we do not get money. Our only "success" here is in votes/comments/views top lists H's W's etc...I will add "visible" success because there are plenty of other benefits to writing here, I am just point out the ones all can see.

Some of the lists are not updating properly.

Lovecraft and Bramblethorn, thanks for the info. Good to know.

I have to agree with you, Lovecraft. regarding the importance of remaining on the front page of a Top List when it comes to a story's potential longevity. Without a doubt, those stories have a much longer shelf-life, and why wouldn't they? New readers are much more likely to find them.
