is she on the pill or some other sort of Rx birth control?
how long have you known her (and that this goes on?)
how old is she?

That really isn't much to go on. Some kinds of medications (birth control but other things too) can cause stuff like that. So can getting older (or being younger) since your body chemistry is changing. I once went through a spell when I lost a bunch of weight and that caused my periods to be different. Stress, diet, activity levels all figure in.
LOL I find that mine are easier in months I've been "happier" more often than when I've been frustrated.
One thing to keep in mind is that women may have similarities in the plumbing but we are custom not stock--every one is slightly different and has her own refinements and upgrades.

Actually, regular periods is the usual most of the time, not the same every single time. People are not machines, and menstrual cycles are extremely sensitive, plus if she is on medication, including birth control, then that can influence a woman's cycle. Like NHL, when I'm going through periods of stress, my cycle will be slightly off. Ditto if I am travelling. I will still get my period around the expected time - maybe a day or two later -but I'll have some cramps or headaches or bleed more or bleed less. Even factoring that, with the some slight irregularities, my periods are considered to be extremely regular. My cousin, on the other hand, will have one 25-day cycle and one 30-day cycle, alternating every single month. That's normal for her, but will not be normal for me.

If she is concerned, then she should keep track for several months - including if she's undergoing stress, or has upped her workout regime.

She could bring it up on her next physical, but if this is something she has experienced most of her menstruating life, then this is normal for her.

Trying to understand the menstrual cycle in actual women that don't live in textbooks (or don't take BCP) is like trying to understand what a goldfish is thinking. It can't be done. And it only gets more complicated as we get older. I've been getting my period for 31 years. The only time it was predictable was when I was on the pill. And when I was pregnant. ;-)

For me, even when I'm taking BCP I really only know the 'when' and I pretty much know that part anyway. My clock is pretty well wound I guess.
If I'm reading that OP correctly he's looking to figure out less of the 'when' than the WTF of it all. That, dear may be beyond the scope of any of us.
If you've known her less than a year you don't really have enough to go on to say if anything is 'normal' for her without asking because this stuff fluctuates like crazy for all sorts of reasons. FireBreeze says she's effected by travelling, well I'm fine when I travel but I'm a mess during the holidays.

Have you asked your lady instead of us? If this is just her being her then it's part of the package and eventually (whether you believe it now or not) you'll get accustomed to it. If it's not just her being her then she should mention it at her next check up. Anytime things change noticeably it's worth a mention even if it seems like a stupid question or a dumb thing to bring up. You may be right that it's nothing in which you've wasted a couple of minutes a few sentences but you may be wrong and you've headed off something you will be glad you avoided.

(I know what your goldfish is thinking BTW but I'm not going to tell you. :) )

I have just read some of your earlier posts and you mentioned that your SO is (and possibly still is) on anti-depressants and that she gained a bit of weight as a result.

This could very very well have an impact on a woman's cycle. If her periods have changed ever since taking anti-depressants, then she should most definitely talk to her doctor about it. If her cycle as you described it was pretty much like that before the meds, then as it was said before, that's what is normal for her.

A woman who isn't on birth control normally releases one egg per menstrual cycle, and the two ovaries usually take turns being the one to release that egg. It might be possible for a woman to have ovaries that are a bit unevenly developed, such that one releases more hormones on its turn than the other. But really you'd have to ask a gynecologist. They might want a sonogram to check if the two ovaries are the same size and don't have any lumps or anything.

Ha! Shows you what you know! I don't have a goldfish!

;-)

thanks for all the replies.
we have been together for 8 or 9 years and she is 36. she uses yasmine as a bcp and is also on anti-depressants. we have discussed the issue and her gynae doesn't think its a problem. i was just curious to know if other women also have up and down periods like this.

i love the idea of knowing what a goldfish is thinking. i must slip that into a conversation.

Every woman has a dominant ovary, and a non-dominant ovary. As women age (approach peri-menopause), the dominant ovary starts reacting more and more strongly to the possibility of shutting down [eventually]. Which means that sometimes, as women approach their 40s (although 36 is a bit on the early side) periods can swing wildly between the period from hell (dominant ovary) and barely there (non-dominant ovary).

Annoyingly normal, but not very pleasant.

that makes sense. i'll pass the info on the next time we talk about it. i have found that she would rather discuss this when she brings it up. ;)

Sex will cure the cramps and bitchiness.

lol.. as opposed to.. "you know how sometimes you get cranky and bitchy? well I asked on this sex site…"

and for the record, sex isn't a sure thing and sometimes it only makes the discomfort easier for the guy

Stress will always screw with my hormones. :) And sex often does wonders for pain, especially the hormonal kind, but obviously you need to bring that up carefully. :)

Huh. Learn something new every day. That explains a whole helluva lot.

I've been quite regular for most of my menstrual life but all those who have described how birth control and other meds can affect your period are of course right on. Sometimes your body just goes through changes and I'm sure a gynecologist could explain that if your wife's alternate periods are characterized by light flow, it may relate to her body's patterns of shedding the uterine lining.
